Google explains how it approaches SEO to its own 7000 websites – Inside Google’s Marketing
Apart from its famous search engine, Google has over 100s of other products with over 7000+ websites. They have marketing team placed for managing the SEO, social media, ads, and promotions of these products and services. Last week, Google released an article which explains how they approach SEO to their own product/service websites.
To really get the most out of SEO, it’s important to stay on top of the latest Google Search updates. Google claims, when it comes how Google sites appear in Search, they receive the same treatment as any other site on the web, and their team follows the same external guidelines provided to webmasters. They make over 200 changes to these websites every single day, all of which could potentially affect a site’s SEO. Yes! 200 changes every day.
Here is the SEO strategy Google does so they are on top no matter what changes are introduced.
For Big Results, Start Small
It might sound simple, but focusing on small and incremental changes to a website’s SEO strategy can produce noticeable gains over time. For example, the Google My Business site saw 2x increase in organic traffic because of the implementation of web fundamental best practices such as canonicals to show search engine what URLs to index, adding XML sitemap, updating meta tag etc.
Of course, it doesn’t happen every time, but they found many of their sites saw strong organic growth in traffic after making some of these simple SEO changes.

Embrace Changes
Google’s search algorithm and features are evolving constantly to fetch the relevant content for its users based on user’s changing behavior. For example, in 2009 only 0.7% of traffic generated were happening in mobile but now over 50% of traffic comes from mobile, and Google has done adaptations in their algorithm to accommodate these user behaviors. They bought in new development such as AMP and Progressive Web Apps for supporting mobile searches.
Marketers might feel overwhelmed by these changes, but if you embrace and experiment with them you will get better SEO results. For example, last year Google’s team focused on fixing Google Search Console errors, implementing structured data, adding AMP etc. to Think with Google site. After they fixed one common AMP error they saw 200% increase in impression. They also found that improving the content has led them being selected on more featured snippets which led to additional 1000+ impressions per day.

Consolidate
It can be tempting to create multiple websites containing very similar content to target different customer profiles or geographic regions. In fact, Google has done it too. A recent audit revealed that over the years Google has created a large number of duplicate sites for different campaigns and marketing promotions.
But here is the problem with that approach, duplicate content doesn’t just confuse users, it confuses search engines too. Creating one great site with amazing content is better than creating multiple microsites for a long time organic growth.
For example, after site audit, they decided to repair Google Retail website. Cleaning up 6 old websites, consolidating content and focusing all energy to one website doubled their call-to-action click-through-rate and increased organic traffic by 64%.
Applying Google’s SEO strategy to your website
Just like other companies, Google doesn't always get SEO right, and they are constantly working to make improvements to their own sites. But by focusing on these three areas, they have been able to build an SEO strategy that’s flexible enough to adapt to new changes, solid enough to drive powerful results, and adaptable enough to be applicable to all websites.
