A few years ago, I was in the subway in Paris and a guy asked me in a rude way if he could use my phone. I came up with a stupid excuse and said "no", feeling a little guilty by seriously doubting of his intentions. Two seconds later, he went off and called me a whore, a slut, a bitch, "suck my dick", "I spit on you" and so on. At first, I was so shocked that I didn't know what to reply! When I could finally open my mouth, what came out was : "sorry but you are being very impolite!" 🙄 I just couldn't find the words!!! I wanted to leave but I couldn't, he was blocking the way out of my seat. I looked around, there were people sitting behind me but no one moved nor spoke up nor did anything. They acted as if they weren't hearing! I thought about punching him to get out (I was a professional athlete, I had decent strength), but what if he had a knife? So I sat still and looked out the window, trying to ignore the endless stream of insults. This went on for the next two subway stations, 6 minutes that felt like 60. Finally, he stood up and left, with a few last insults on his way out. I arrived at my destination a few stations later, pretty shaken up by what just happened to me! A friend was meeting me for lunch, so I told him right away all the details of my horrible subway ride! And guess what was his answer? "Oh yeah, it happens pretty often here..." He was barely shocked, rather jaded. As if it has became normal. As if insults didn't mean anything anymore. As if they didn't hurt, nor haunt. Well they did. Words should never be underestimated. They are verbal violence, sometimes even more powerful than the physical one. Have you ever lived such a thing? Have you been insulted, been called a whore, a bitch, a slut? How did it feel?
