they named episode 5 "shock jock" because they shocked a demogorgan on the radio tower.
but remember when we thought it was because robin, a literal disc jockey on a talk radio show, would "express opinions in a deliberately provocative and offensive way"? hawkins' shock jock, revealing the jarring truth about the upside down and the potential collision of dimensions to her unsuspecting listeners? truths about the government, secret lab projects, and the blood of so many in the hands of the so few in charge? maybe even a subtle hint about herself that she would never normally reveal, in fear of becoming the town pariah? but hey, if it helped will unlock literal superpowers, maybe it might do the same for some other kid out there too, a kid like her. and if it didnt, the world is ending, so fuck it right?
they named episode 6 "escape from camazotz" because max escaped the place holly nicknamed after a book she read in school.
but remember when we thought it was because mike would finally escape his prison of forced conformity? that he would accept that he was never in love with jane, that he still wanted to play dnd, and that he didn't want to hide his emotions anymore? because max was always paralleling him to to holly, who was literally trapped in camazotz? "ok, i changed my mind. you're not like your brother, you are your brother", constantly pushing for her to be "brave", reminding her that she didn't need to hide behind holly the heroic? that she just needed someone to tie her back to the real world, someone that reminded her of home?
they named episode 7 "the bridge" because steve fucking harrington suggested they cross the bridge between worlds.
but do you remember when we thought it was because will and mike would finally connect on an emotional level, after being separated and oblivious to the other's feelings for three seasons? because they would have to rely on their connection and shared memories to defeat vecna, together? because the line between will and henry's psyches was blurring, and to destroy him, they had to break their tether, had to burn the bridge? or because mike "i don't want to have any more regrets" wheeler was going to confront his feelings, the very thing he had been putting off doing for so long? put it all on the line, now that the world may end? that he was finally going to cross that bridge, now that he'd gotten to it?
remember when we thought creative decisions held meaning?
