Research
“Thinking with hands”
Today, I also looked at a few different websites to research about Ricardo’s suggestion. Firstly, there are new views of creative intelligence taking shape in psychology and biological sciences. It’s been discovered that “thinking doesn't happen in an abstract, disembodied mind. This is known as embodied cognition. “We change our minds by moving our hands,” writes Professor Susan Goldin-Meadow of the Psychology Department of the University of Chicago in a recent issue of the journal Cognitive Science.” (7) Many studies have shown that our bodies, especially our hands, play an important role in our thinking manner. Moving physically in some way provokes thoughts that can not be recalled by sitting still. Which is why, I guess, many people tend to run, walk, fidget, etc. so they can clear their mind and think things through. “Psychologists are now recognising something that artists have intuitively always known, that we think with our hands as much as our brains.” (7) For example, “When an artist makes an artwork, they are giving life to their ideas. We can literally see them. They are not detached and analytical. There are many people who act without thinking, and others who think without acting. Artists think as they act. An artist doesn’t draw and then think, he draws and thinks at the same time. That is why their ideas have such power. So, if you want to formulate new ideas, think with your hands. Make something as you reflect.” (7) If we didn’t physically move, it is quite hard for the brain to process information or think of new ideas. I guess this is why it is recommended to stand up and move around after every couple of hours. I also believe that our senses are quite vital for the thinking process in our brains. For example, “Consider a game of Scrabble: players naturally touch, move and re-arrange the tiles they receive. If thinking was simply done “in the head”, what’s the purpose of these moves?” (6) To be honest, I completely agree with this information - “People are more creative and more efficient when solving problems with their hands: thinking is an embodied activity embedded in a physical environment.” This is because, as an artist, I tend to sketch, write, scribble, doodle etc. to think of more ideas than I do with just sitting in one place and staring at a blank piece of paper. In my opinion, if we don’t write, or doodle, then we won’t be able to develop our ideas, or our senses, or learn new things. “Our capacity to think and reason well at any given moment depends as much on our cognitive abilities as it does on the richness – or paucity – of material things with which to support our thinking and decision-making.” (5) A research study published in the Acta Psychologica journal, shows that physically moving your hands allows you to problem solve as well. No matter what a person’s individual capability is, the study proved that the people working wiht their hands to create a model were more likely to solve problems along the way, than the people who used a tablet just to draw the model. (4) So, I guess that the research behind the concept of my card play shows that my card will benefit most people and allow the, to think differently, effectively and logically, along with the ability to solve problems by moving my card with their hands. This is because no person can create something amazing as an “ iPhone, or an aeroplane without prototyping, sprinting, building, practising and designing.” (2) And in my opinion, it is this hands-on stuff that allows people to grow and develop their ideas, their senses, and their ability to work well. “Thinking with hands” also increases the value of people’s ideas as it can be used across all industries.
