New Thinkpad?: A Checklist
Alright, so you’ve acquired a Thinkpad, congratulations on owning one of the finest pieces of technology imo. Now what?
1. UPDATING THE DRIVERS
Well, updating the drivers is critical due to a software flaw that eventually nukes the charging ports and kills your Thinkpad.
Here’s how to fix this:
Go to the Lenovo.com website, click support, and click technical support.
From there it should take you to where you can select your laptop and add the serial number.
(HINT: If you don't know your serial number follow the help link underneath the white bar for help)
Once you have the serial number inputted into the side, click on Drivers & Software.
Download the Lenovo Vantage and update the system from there. Make sure you are logged in as an admin. Once you update the system, you can move onto the horrendous list of intimidating numbers and letters. Never fear, just search for the model laptop you have.
Install the Driver Package first. There might be two if you have a T480 like me. Actually read through the README for instructions on how to manually install the package.
Find the dowloaded file and click on it. Follow the README instructions. Click install now and follow the instructions. Restart after installation. Repeat for every file.
The T480 should have three different software files to install.
Double check that the drivers are working properly by right clicking on the windows icon, tapping device manager, double tapping system devices, and double tapping Thunderbolt Controller down at the bottom of the list. Move over to Driver and check it out to see if everything looks great.
Congrats, you just updated the drivers on your Thinkpad and it shouldn't try to follow in the way of the disgraced samurai.
