There is literally no circumstance where I support age verification to access a website. As I've said before I'm very much the "there's nuance here" person on almost everything but on this issue there's no nuance for me, it's awful and horrible in and of itself and it also sets an awful and horrible precedent
I'm fine with "click here to confirm you're an adult" because it keeps people from finding it by accident.
I do not give a shit if the people checking the box are actually adults, and oppose any effort to confirm that they are.
"But minors might lie and click to confirm they're adults when they're not!!! :((((" Yeah, and they might use a parent or adult sibling's ID or credit card (or Norman Reedus' face!) to bypass age verification, too.
There is not a single type of age verification that will meaningfully stop underage people from accessing anything, which is completely fine from the perspective of the governments trying to force this shit on us because they aren't interested in protecting children. This is about tying your meatspace identity to your online activities and very little else.
If this were about protecting children, "Are you 18+? Y/N" would be completely sufficient. It's not the fault of a given website if someone lies about their age in order to access it, so by asking the visitor to confirm their age, they're doing enough to cover their own asses. After that, if a kid sees something that might wind up upsetting them, it's on their parents or guardians for not supervising them.

As someone whoâs job is to handle chemicals like this, I need to state that this information is IMPORTANT. Plenty of people have accidentally injured or killed themselves at home because they didnât know what kind of reaction certain substances have with one another. Play it safe and donât mix chemicals.
Also donât use bleach to clean up urine itâll create chloramine bc of the ammonia in it and you can give yourself chemical pnemonia that way

You gotta read and watch some old books and films that arenât 100% modern politically correct. Iâm not saying you should agree with everything in them but you need to learn where genres came from to understand what those genres are doing today and where media deconstructing old tropes is coming from.
Also, more often than you might think, theyâre not actually promoting bigotry so much as âdidnât consider all the implications of somethingâ or just used words that were polite then but considered offensive now.

When we choose to avoid history because it's Problematic or Says Bad Things, we are choosing to divorce ourselves from understanding how we came from that time to this one, which makes it even more likely for the cycle to repeat, with no one but a few people with shelves of old books aware that it's happened before.
and this shit's important. Media from the past tells us how people from the past acted and thought and behaved.
Plus, a lot of these media pieces were socially acceptable and/or progressive for their time. For example, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, while it contains a lot of words and ideas that are offensive now, was very progressive for its time. The book is a statement piece for how a young man who's grown up in a racist environment, with no words to explain himself other than racist and bigoted ones, decides that the whole system is shit and he's not going to follow those rules any more. So not reading or engaging with it because it uses the n-word a lot really misses the point.
Besides the obvious like having financial security, being able to support your community and take care of friends and family, the whole "money doesn't bring happiness" bullshit is still bullshit because even if we only look at it from "buying frivolous trinkets" point of view, there's so many fun things I'd get myself commissioned just for shits and giggles.
For one, I'd get my dental layout scanned and then use the 3d model of my teeth to commission a giant pair of pincers where the cutters are replaced with a life-sized metal recreation of my teeth. I would use these to press bite marks on all sorts of things that a human being physically could not bite into, and emotionally would not want to.
For no other reason than to fuck with people. Just so they can see a very obviously human bite mark on something and wonder how the fuck did someone bite a goddamn brick wall, and why would anybody do that.
