A Working Test 10base2 ( thinnet ) BUS Ethernet Network in 2015.
10base2 is a fairly resilient technology, even though it is completely outdated now ( and has probably drove a ton of people to the loony bin. and has almost vanished information wise from the Internet ).
I've been toying with this old outdated technology on and off for a few years. most of my issues have been not having 2x 50Ω terminators for each end, and i have been trying to cobble things together. so I finally got it all working using about 6 feet of cable, so I thought to myself let's give this a challenge.
"topology"
50Ω terminator ( in this case it's a 50Ω 10w resistor. and a paralleled variable
resistor, to compensate for the 50Ω and 75Ω cable differences ).
"T" connector.
5 foot 50Ω BNC Cable.
BNC to RCA adapter.
RCA to F connector 3 foot custom 75Ω TV cable.
50 feet of 75Ω TV twin lead coax ( sharing with my OTA TV ).
RCA to F connector 3 foot custom 75Ω TV cable.
RCA coupler.
BNC to RCA adapter.
6 foot 50Ω? BNC Cable.
"T" connector.
50Ω terminator.
each "T" connector goes into a HUB that has both 10BaseT and 10Base2 BNC, then one end goes to my switch the other goes into a computer.
so after running this over approximately 67 feet of mismatched inappropriate cables, adapters and fine tuning the variable resistor ( so that I got a reading of 25Ω collective ).
i powered everything up and was….
immediately online!
with a reliable connection and the maximum speed that my ISP provides ( 8Mbps down ).
somewhere in my mess I have an ISA networking card with 10/100BaseT and 10Base2 connections which will allow me to have 3 devices connected to the
bus network, currently I'm only able to do 2 because that's all I have at the moment.
