Posted on day 4 cause I'm lazy but also:

Nothing new to report. Wore the same pair of underwear all day due to a very light/spotty flow. Thus far I am having good luck free flowing. Sometimes I get a heavy day after initially starting and slowing down...but this month seems to be a success if a nerve wracking process.

Day 2

Posted on day 3 cause we watched FIVE hours of forking movies at the drive in. Well, just about.

Sooooooooo weird wearing them last time I slept cause I felt myself bleeding and feared i was leaking onto my pj pants or sheets, BUT NOPE, NOT TODAY MOFO! In fact, I bled less than usual but I did switch out when I woke up for good, asked mother to hang them when they finished in the washer.

Side note: I found an article about saving on laundry costs with Thinx. When I’ve had to wash my underwear by themselves without other clothes, I’ve been using a like...a centimeter or two of detergent and set it on the lightest setting, but this article talks about using a salad spinner as a quick washing replacement. They’re only about 16 bucks at Walmart and take about 15minutes so that’s exciting and probably easier!

Wore the clean pair the rest of the day and to the Drive In. Unlike day 1, I didn’t bleed as heavily so when I’d wipe at my underwear out of curiosity, not much came off so that’s exciting and a major plus! Felt clean and mostly dry the entire day.

I’m liking Thinx at the moment. Especially for being what I’d consider a MAJOR heavy period haver and free flowing instead of using a tampon and the underwear as backup. It was so liberating being out and about and feeling normal, comfortable, not worrying about pads, carrying them, switching them, taking too long and letting them like...dissolve/rip into pieces all ick like...

Updates to follow, though I’m usually the heaviest on days 1 through 3 but if I’m this light today...dunno if much exciting stuff will continue to happen.

Miko Tries Thinx Underwear

Day 1

Thinx are a brand of underwear that is reusable for one’s period, more as a backup to tampons if one has a heavier flow. “For people with periods”.

So I finally made the leap to try this brand. I’ve been kinda sorta following them for several years but thought I was doing good and last year when I checked the price, I was nervous. Last month however, I got pissed about leaking into my underwear again so I took the chance and ordered three pairs.

Cue first day of period with the chance to use Thinx.

I got the boyshorts (essentially boxer briefs), and two of the cotton briefs (hiphugger style imo), one black and one grey. I tried the boyshorts before my period even started and they didn’t even fit me, they were digging into my thighs when I sat and they didn’t want to stay up over my butt cause I have a big butt. So I asked for a refund, which occurred super quickly, an automated system I believe, and I immediately went to order another pair of black cotton briefs.

Overnight, or rather when I slept today (4am to about 2:30pm), I wore the black briefs and I slept comfortably without the use of a pad for once and I didn’t leak! For the first time I was able to sleep through the ‘night’ without staining my underwear or pj pants or worry it would leak so far as to stain my sheets!

Wake up, switch to the grey briefs, and hand wash in cold water the black pair, then do a load of laundry, hang the underwear to air dry over my tub. Some hours later I use the bathroom and note I’ve bled onto the grey leg holes (or side gusset as I learned in an email) and eventually it kind of leaked around to the other/under side of the underwear.

I use the lightest setting on our dryer, the fluff setting, to try and more quickly dry my black briefs because they came out just fine, or if there was I didn’t see it. Finally switch out to the black pair again and cold wash the grey and most of the blood did come out, so I wash them alone in the machine. It was then I got an email from their support staff saying the blood would come out upon washing, but this was unfortunately after I requested a refund so I could get another pair of black briefs cause I feel safer in them. So I’m going to send back the boyshorts as they were never worn during my period nor washed nor worn for more than a minute.

Mind you: I’m free flowing (heavily) in THINX cause I’ve never used a tampon before and they kind of really make me nervous.

Turns out, the blood DID completely come out of the grey briefs, so despite the fact they...ya leaked and look bad (not that anyone’s seeing me in my underwear alone BESIDES the cats but still...), they turned out just fine!

I know it’s only Day 1 and at the moment I only have 2 pairs of underwear to bounce between, meaning I’ll probably be washing them each day of my period, it’s going well. It’s much more comfortable then wearing a pad, very...freeing.

I get nervous when I feel that squirt of liquid but the underwear’s doing its job just fine. And they don’t feel like diapers, or Depends or anything like that. They are a little thicker in the crotch region (almost like swimwear) because they use like 4 different layers for 4 different purposes, but they’re not thick feeling when worn.

day four to seven of thinx undies (the Verdict)

OKAY GUYS TIME FOR

the verdict.

please note that i am not being paid. this should be obvs if many of you know me, but.

so after one period i can say that these totally replaced my pads. the only time i had a leak was wearing a pair that weren’t designed for my flow and weren’t designed for nighttime. my flow is heavy to start, as i previously mentioned, and the undies held up for 8 hours before i started feeling gross. the underwear itself might have actually lasted longer, but i’ll test those limits another time.

so, these undies are best/will work for people who:

don’t mind/are used to the feeling of bleeding out 

are used to/are comfortable with pads

hate tampons or pads and would rather just free bleed

are busy or don’t like changing tampons/pads often because of noise, smell, feel, etc.

want to help by reducing landfills

prefer less matienence for periods

i calculated this one and it came out to 768 less pads over 2 years

my set will also repay itself in about two years. 

these are not great for people who

don’t like the idea of rinsing out blood from your underwear

don’t like the feeling of bleeding out

hate doing laundry???

really dislike the concept of pads/outer menstrual wear (vs inner like a tampon, diva cup, etc)

are super heavy bleeders 

i would feel this last one would likely just make the product more inconvenient because instead of changing a tampon or pad every few hours, you’re changing underwear that you can’t toss out. rest assured, they last much longer than a single tampon and most pads on a heavy day, but if you’re worried about too much blood, try it out first on a day you’re doing nothing and see how convenient it is for you.

one note though: they have a boyshort pair, and for those who are trans definitely need a better range of flow protection. i am cis so i am ignorant of gender dysphoria and how clothes may play into this, but if someone would feel better in the boyshorts (one tampons’ worth) vs the (lacy) hiphuggers but want the protection of the hiphuggers (two tampons’ worth), there’s an issue (but i’m sure they’re aware).

tl;dr: these undies are amazing, replace pads easily (as long as your flow isn’t REALLY heavy), and depending on what you buy and how often, will pay for themselves after two years.

period undies vs pads ($$)

this is based entirely on my cycle and what i’ve purchased so obviously this would change person to person.

~1 pad per 3 hours in first 3 days

up for ~10/12 hours + one for nighttime = max 5 pads in the first 3 days ~ 15 pads in the first 3 days

~ 3 pads (including night) used for each of the remaining 4 days = 12 pads for the last 4 days

~27 pads per 7 day long period for me.

1 pack of always ultra thin long super pads (we’ll exclude the nighttime ones b/c i could live without) = 32 pads

~0.84 packs per period

~1.2 periods per pack (let’s just say one)

one period = approx. one pack.

so how much does one pack usually cost?

8.99 per pack + tax = $10.12 let’s note that you can get cheaper brands and larger packs. this would decrease this price. some people also get thicker ones or more expensive brands like the infinity flex pads which could raise this price. 

so that’s $122 min for one year of menstruating. 

what i have: 

5 hiphugger (34 x 5) 1 cheeky (29) 1 sport (32)

total: ~$231 value (plus shipping, though we got 20% off because we ordered 7).

so

~1.9 years until they pay themselves!

if i were to calculate this for the infinity pads which are a few dollars more (that my sister and i commonly get), and are much drier, they would pay off even faster. i’m also not including the overnight pads that we usually use. we go thru them slower but they cost a bit more i believe. for simplicity i left both of these out.

that’s also approximately 768 less pads over two years that would be going into the landfills because of me!! so let’s say that even if i wanted to spend the same amount on period protection stuffs, i would only have to replace the underwear every two years, and because they’re only being washed and used once a month, they should last longer than that.

day three of thinx undies

so today was good, i’ve kind of forgotten that i’ve had my period at all?? i’m not itchy or chafing or nothing. this is good :D i even went around today doing many errands and completely forgot about them until 8 hours later.

since i sense that the next few days of my period will be uneventful, i’ll likely make a comprehensive post for the last four days of my cycle.

day two of thinx undies

undies: hiphugger (2 tampons worth) and sport (1 and 1/2 tampons worth)

flow for me: medium/heavy

so i obviously had to end up changing my underwear yesterday after my last post. i’ve gotta be honest, if you don’t like the idea of rinsing out your own blood and having it all over your hands, these aren’t for you. the company says you don’t have to rinse the underwear before washing, but it’s likely best since the blood is going to get all over the rest of your clothes (though not necessarily stain them). i’m cool with it since i deal with nosebleeds often, but for anyone else idk how they’d feel about it.

washing as easy though! they came out nice and clean and were dry by the time i woke up! 

i wore the sport pair i have overnight since i typically have a slower flow overnight. that was a small mistake. the undies were almost overflowing by the time i woke up at around 11 and had leaked a small amount. they didn’t feel full though. just looked it. so note to self, wear hiphuggers to bed!

otherwise, we’re good. i’m going to try to wear the undies as long as i can to see if they really get full??

tl;dr: rinsing the underwear is a bit gross but doable and the sport pair is not good for overnight overage (heh, duh). everything else is good!
