watching the storm
Still have so much to do... but I’m keeping the creativity train a rolling.
May I introduce you to ‘Uxin Bon’ (possibly name change down the line. totally open to suggestions).
So info about him: First, I’m playing no games with rep (aside from one specific thing, but that is for later), so I’ll come out and say it: he is a trans man. Much like Jace, his primary inspiration source, he uses his powers to hide his form whenever possible. His ultimate goal is to save up enough cash and find a powerful enough magic user to finally get a true transition.
Unlike his prime inspiration, he is much more a slight of hand, illusions, smoke and mirrors sort of rogue then a mind mage.
Other inspirations: Sadly, most of him is a bunch of nebulous aspects. I did get a little inspired from Ugin (mostly in the name)... which led me down the stereotype ‘dragon’ aspect, leading me to a more asian feel for him. I’m thinking of just dropping the dragon aspect (both as the dragon concept is more involved with the actual plot and I really don’t want to keep stereotypes as much as possible). I feel like there might be a little ‘gambit’ in him, but still feeling it out. Basically, he is an asian (need to nail a more specific angle on that) Jace with a little injection of just about any ‘Flint’/Han Solo/Gambit’ sort of scoundrel sort.
He is still a bit of a lump of clay in process, more so then the first two, but less so then the other characters I’m reworking that come much later in the story.
Sen and Milly will meet Uxin about the second or third arc. (each ‘arc’ is going to be roughly 3-4 issues worth of comic).
His primary home of residence is a hub city and home to a powerful empress of gold... (more on her in a future post).
Speaking of: Each main character’s home, much like themselves, will have some element of base inspiration from their most well known homes: Sen, being ‘born’ of Chandra, comes from a village with a vague flavor of invention about it (kaladesh) Milly, with her connection to Nissa, comes from a land of power and nature (zendikar) Uxin, the jace of the team, cominging from a hub city with a multicultural feel (ravnica) (Unnamed Old Man Soldier), a character that, so far in his creation is a little bit Gideon, and a little bit Ajani, hail from a very theocratic, military nation.
My Lilianna character is getting super heavy reworkings. I might even be taking a serious left turn on this one and starting either ‘fresh’ or just going at it from another angle. Given that I don’t plan on having this character appear too soon (a change from the original BxD comic idea, as she was going to be the original third member of the team), I’m not going to sweat it too much just yet. But yes, whoever eventually comes of this line of creative thinking will hail, likely, from something of a land of ruins and history (innistrad/dominaria inspired)
For those that are scracthing your heads about how come I’m mentioning so much MtG stuffs: This is both a story and a sort of ‘study’. There is no such thing as an original story, only fresh ways of mixing and matching. And so, I’m keeping as much track of where my inspirations for each character and major plot aspect come from. I’m not doing every single little detail, because that would be stupid insane and distract too much from the primary goal of actually making a cool story. I’m just being more mindful of where I’m actually taking my inspirations from and how I’m boiling things down, what elements are used and how things change during the process.
It’s actually been really fun actively watching the changes as I go, seeing what elements stay prominent and what gets hidden, stretched, or shifted as I go.
Once I’m closer to making a proper start of the comic, I might just make a blog specific to it... but not sure yet XD
