IM GOING INSANE
Hey Darcy, something just occurred to me: is it just me or does being an Angel not seem to involve much actual work for Aziraphale? Like we joke about Crowley being a bad demon but like, it's not for lack of trying. He invents sin by tempting Eve and seem to be sent a pretty constant stream of tasks from that point onwards - he takes Jesus on an epic bacpacking trip, attempts to tempt Caligula, forments rebellion in Wessex, is meant to tempt a clan leader to theft in Edinburgh, spends months
on the M25, brings down every phone network in London, delivers the antichrist - and has taken/been given credit for a whole lot more. Conversely, when we encounter Aziraphale throughout history, very seldom is he engaged in any actual task. There’s guarding the Eastern Gate, spreading peace for King Arthur, the blessing in Edinburgh… and that’s it. At most of the events throughout history his main task is either bearing witness - the ark, the crucifixion - or getting himself out of whatever
scrape he’s gotten himself into out of what I can only assume is sheer boredom. Look at the thing with the Nazis - there’s no way that that was a heavenly assignment! There’s a not 0% chance that he ended up in a nearly fatal doublecross purely because he didn’t actually have anything else to do with his time. Arguably the biggest heavenly task he takes on is influencing the antichrist and that’s not something he comes up with himself, but something heaven doesn’t even see the point of…
Which begs the question: what is Aziraphale even meant to be doing on earth? And if it is mostly about simply bearing witness, how very sad and lonely must that existence be? We all talk a lot about how very difficult things are for Crowley being a demon with no real taste for cruelty, but how about being an angel who can’t pass by those in distress but constantly instructed to do exactly that?

this is such a fascinating observation because principalities are meant to protect, but you’re right, aziraphale does seem tasked with doing an awful lot of bearing witness. i posit that aziraphale’s Job, basically, is to protect the great plan, which is where a lot of his character’s tension comes in: he’s instructed to protect the great plan, but his desire is to protect the humans themselves. since a lot of aziraphale’s arc is wrapped up in his queer narrative of being stuck in a fundamentalist family, you can see the easy equivalent - people raised to protect the tenets of faith but who struggle to reconcile the hate and bigotry inherent in most fundamental christianity. aziraphale’s arc is about breaking out of that struggle, his tradition versus his feelings. aziraphale’s not really there to guide humans to do good or to save humans for heaven - heaven never discusses saving souls the way the demons discuss damning souls, because heaven in good omens doesn’t really care about individuals. instead they repeatedly harp on and on and on about this great plan. who cares if hell gets a few souls here and there as long as the great plan succeeds! it’s cold and it’s harsh and it’s exactly what’s happening during the great flood, during jesus’ death, during the french revolution and 1941 when aziraphale himself is in danger, and ya know, the whole apocalypse thing.
so yeah, bearing witness is correct. he’s there to make sure everything goes according to the great plan. until, of course, he’s had enough of the great plan. he’s borne witness to enough atrocities. he was made to protect, damnnit. he’s going to finally do some god damn protecting.

Protection Squad Names
So, we all know about the PPPS (Peter Parker Protection Squad), but has anyone noticed that if Tony Stark had a protection squad it’d be called TSPS and that if Cap had one it would literally be called CAPS?
