I feel like the world needs to know the context of the edinburgh zoo penguin parade, becausr I’ve been going there my entire life and I only found out about this the other year.

So a while back (I can’t remember exactly when but I think it was some time around the 40s/50s), a bunch of penguins escaped. A keeper left the gate open so a bunch of penguins just… followed them. And the people loved it. Look at these adorable birds outside their cage just following that guy around! So they get all the penguins back inside and realise that none of them really ran off, they just followed the keeper and went back inside and crowd thought it was amazing, so why not make it a regular thing? Get enough people there that if one of them goes to make a run for it (which at least one has in the past), they can’t get past the people, and let the ones who want outside have a little wander. So every day, they get a crowd, they open the gate, and whatever penguins want to get out can go, waddle about, squawk at people, and then hop back inside.

Also, one of those penguins is Brigadier Sir Nils Olaf III, Colonel-in-cheif of the Norwegian King’s Guard. This isn’t really related to the parade at all, I just love the fact that there’s a penguin in the Norwegian army

A lovely older friend of mine lived in Edinburgh when she was a small child, and regularly attended the penguin parade – as a penguin. That is, she was a small toddler and thus about the right height and speed, and she just waddled along with everyone else who was about 2’ high.

So the answer to ‘can I volunteer to be a penguin’ is at least occasionally ‘yes.’

I love the little addition of the brushbuddy trying to burrow under Qifrey's cloak in several episodes now. I love that the animation team put thought and effort into that detail. don't think too hard about it.

A giant nitpick but I think it's a loss to tone down the intensity of Richeh's anger in this moment.

Like with cutting out the praise for Agott's bird in Ep.7, something of the specificity of Richeh's dynamic with Qifrey gets a little lost. How intensely she feels her rage and how quickly she comes down after barely a few words does a lot to characterize her AND her dynamic with Qifrey. I mean beyond the obvious text of the scene already. Like ... it matters that she sees Qifrey as a safe adult to blow up on publicly when she feels betrayed. Explicitly berate. In front of his peers (same with Agott slapping his hand away in Ep.7). She never yells and in fact immediately starts avoiding eye-contact (until he asks for her trust) but the depth of her anger is visually much more present in the manga. And it matters that Qifrey knows how to quickly deescalate without dismissing her anger or sense of betrayal when he's invoked that kind of hurt. Again, this is extremely nitpicky but there is something that feels vital to me here that shouldn't have been toned down.

The other cut I wanna talk about is:

I've seen some people already mourn the loss of the Qifrey-attempts-to-take-in-yet-another-child meme fodder but I am upset for the loss of Euini and Alaira moments. As a bit of worldbuilding, this info and its implications will come up again. But there is some subtle character work beyond the explicit text here too. And also also, I want every scrap and crumb of Alaira and Euini goddammit. His acute awareness of the gap between his reality and the kind of care he craves is so T_T

Not to mention the bit of comedy (the frantic turn around above from Reassuring Adult™️to Ayo WTF⁉️) and casual intimacy in Alaira and Qifrey's interaction.

Any Alaira moment is a treasure to me specifically?? Why would you deny me my crumbs so???

not to simp for a corporation but I love my Framework laptop so much. last week I accidentally sat on it and cracked the screen. I went to the manufacturer's website, ordered a new screen for a reasonable price, and when it arrived it took 10 minutes to install. no glue, no "warranty void" tamper seals, just a handful of screws that I only needed one screwdriver to turn. the new screen even came with some fun stickers that say things like "you should be able to fix your stuff". please please buy repair-friendly stuff when you can

This looks appealing to me as someone whose battery crapped out in a Dell and I had to buy a whole new laptop because it was soldered in place.

But I've never used Linux before and I'm not really a programming person. How difficult would this be to pick up, if you're someone who's only used Windows and only coded in R for college?

Linux Mint is basically built for former windows users. I was able to switch over fine. It kind of depends on what programs you regularly use. There are A LOT of open sources alternatives to most Windows things. Mint comes with many of them built in (Shout out to LibreOffice). Many windows programs might also work through Wine. If you only use Office stuff then you'll probably be fine. Adobe programs are kind of tricky. If you only play games you likely will also be fine (Unless you play a ton of multiplayer games, those companies are too lazy to update the anti-cheat to work with Linux but most steam games work fine either natively or through Proton). I think it's worth it, and you can duel-boot both to try out!
