What do you think Suki and Toph would have had to say during The Southern Raiders episode when Aang, Sokka, Zuko and Katara were discussing finding Yon Rha? I personally believe Sokka was ooc in that little bit because he, more than anyone else, would understand where Katara is coming from and would be more empathetic than he was shown to be.
(My GOD I just spent half an hour writing a thorough and long reply only for it to be completely erased and I'm just melting right now... I have to start over and it’ll probably not be as good as my first draft so sorry) (update: I just finished writing the new version and there’s a power outage and I’m furiously copy-and-pasting this to a word document after every word I add waiting for the internet to come back. It’s like the world doesn’t want me to answer your question anon!) (second update: the outbreak was over an hour long... there’s something in the air I tell ya...)
That’s a good question. I really don’t think Toph would have had any problem with what Katara wanted to do. Moreover, I believe that had Katara asked her, Toph would have been more than willing to join them on their journey. And it would have been absolutely amazing to watch, like a sort of parallel or continuation to The Runaway. It would have been great to see them work together and talk a little more, since the more time goes by the more I think Toph might be the most wasted character in the entire show and that she deserved so much more screen time and to delve deeper into her opinions and to give her some sort of an arc because she barely had any we get so little of her inner world and it would have been very interesting to learn more about her and to see the two of them interact and discuss morality and the likes. But since this episode was after all about Katara and Zuko’s relationship and about her forgiving him, I understand why there wasn’t really much time for another character in all of this.
Regarding Suki, I unfortunately don’t have a lot to go on. I think that considering her actions in the show I can go so far as to say that she has a strong sense of justice and that like Toph she would probably have been fairly cool with the idea and would have also been down for a field trip if asked. And that would have been even more awesome to watch since Suki has so little interactions with anyone besides Sokka, and I would have loved to see her work beside her future sister-in-law (fuck canon) and just see more female friendship (that isn’t based on abuse and fear). An all-female field trip of Katara, Suki and Toph would have been awesome - just watching them kicking ass and talking about justice, vengeance, forgiveness, grief, and healing in a war torn world, with each of their unique perspectives, personalities and points of view. But again, this was about Zuko and Katara so I get why they weren’t really in the episode.
Sokka was beyond ooc in the episode, and it was not only frustrating but down right alienating when it came to the forced moralism and him siding with Aang for zero logical reasons. @iamfitzwilliamdarcy and @catie-does-things actually recently talked about this and gave some suggestions of how his role in the episode could have been different, it’s a great read. I don’t really have a solid opinion at the moment of what he should have done - at the very least have a more meaningful discussion about the issue with Katara or just actually going with her - but I know that what we were shown in the episode was NOT what Sokka would have done in the situation and it was solely for the sake of making Aang look like the Good Guy in the episode who is always right and has moral superiority over everyone else.
