being the undisputed meme-queen, can you explain the recent meme-ification on the song "fireflies"? that song is like 8 years old... not that i'm complaining, they're funny, but just seems.. off? out of time? did a time traveler invent this meme?!
So it’s always been a kinda background meme since it came out, but recently it got big on Instagram, and has since transferred to other platforms like twitter and tumblr!

My girlfriend doesn't know the proper definition of a meme. I figured you might be the best person to give her an adequate definition. Mine didn't explain it well enough, I guess.
The word “meme” was invented by Richard Dawkins to explain the spread of ideas through culture. The general definition is this: a meme is something that spreads from person to person throughout a culture (whether it be an IRL culture or an internet culture.) It can be a song, an image, a phrase, a GIF, a video, pretty much anything. As it spreads through culture, it kind of takes on a life of its own — people put their own spin on it, change it slightly, add to it, etc.
