i saw that you chose cfy as lbh and read your tags and like! exactly what i was talking with my sister these days... i think cfy looks like the perfect ml/mc for some of the novels that are being adapted to drama (a giant excited baby who can protecc but also attac??!)... i feel sad that cfy is probably never going to be a male lead for a bl adaptation again but i'm really excited about seeing him as mr/txj (also... there'll be even more scenes to gif for fancast after hyx airs too :P)

hello! i've just followed your account but i've been reading your posts for some time now and i really want to say thank you for your translations and your kind answers about the subject! i like studying about languages and translations (even though i am not a translator myself) and i like reading your posts about the translator's choices and the (linguistic/cultural) differences between chinese and english for example... thank you so much, again, and keep up the good work ♥

I’m really glad that you’ve found my previous posts on translation of interest. I hope that I didn’t come across as if I was touting that my interpretation and translations were somehow more accurate or valid to the detriment of others. I’m keenly aware that the way I translate is a reflection of my own biased vision of the text, story, genre and characters and I can only do my best to be faithful to the writer’s intent as I understand it with my imperfect cultural and linguistic baggage. No translation is exempt from criticism and I’m always open to discussion on my own translation choices. It can be stimulating to confront points of views rationally because there’s always something to be gained from looking at things from a different perspective!

There will never be such a thing as a perfect translation, not even when it’s done professionally, because there is never a one-to-one correspondence between two languages, two cultures, and allow me to reiterate that Chinese and English are extremely disparate. A translator can only strive to balance accuracy and expressiveness, weigh every possible word and make the least bad choice. Yet there will always be something irremediably lost. Chinese is an intricate language layered with a plurality of meanings hidden in a single sentence. It commonly relies on evoking an image, a feeling through veiled references and metaphorical descriptions. And while the Chinese language suggests, the English language tends to impose.

1. If you’re an author, how many WIPs do you currently have? (Be honest!)

If you’d asked me ten hours ago, it would have been eight, but now that Qinghe Jue is finished and posted I’m down to seven! Nevermore (Pacific Rim AU for MDZS/CQL), and A Court of Azeroth and Prythian (A Court of Thorns and Roses and World of Warcraft crossover) are the only ones that currently have chapters posted (although ACOAAP is currently on a lengthy hiatus for a range of personal reasons, but it will eventually be finished). I’m also working on another two for MDZS/CQL, two for Guardian, and a crossover fic between MDZS/CQL and Guardian. I have a few more plotbunnies kicking around, but none of those are formed enough to start working on yet.

3. Do you prefer canonverse or AUs?

That’s a really hard question, because it actually depends on the ‘verse, for both reading and writing. I love both options for all ‘verses, but I’m a huge fan of MDZS/CQL AUs, and a bigger fan of Guardian drama AUs that make sure weilan eventually get a happy ending. For some of my older fandoms, like Star Trek and Sailor Moon, I tend to prefer canonverse.

11. Kid fic or childhood friends?

I don’t mind kidfic, especially if it features A-Yuan, but childhood friends, all the way.

18. Do you have a fic reading/writing routine?

For writing, I really should, but...no. I am a writing gremlin. I try to get at least a few sentences written each evening, though.

For reading, I check for updates to fics I have bookmarked about twice a day, generally around lunchtime and in the evening, and trawl through AO3 for new fics to read or add to my reading list once or twice a week.

charlie, you broke me, what if the first memories about lan wangji that wei wuxian recovers are the ones about their hugs??? their kisses??? but he's so broken that he doesn't know how to piece everything and!!! he starts remembering it after lan wangji brought him to gusu (first, to hide and plan an attack on the villains; after they defeat them, he wants wei ying to be safe because other people are after the yiling laozu);

Y E S when he's starting to come out of it he remembers little things like lwj's calligraphy in the library or the way his sword looked in the sun the day they first met. or he starts rambling lan clan rules one after the other because for some reason he knows the man in white takes comfort in them.
