It’s only been a week when Lydia hears a suspicious thunk outside her window and then the faint but unmistakable sounds of someone beginning an ascent up her tower. Considering the witch that locked her up here said it would be at least a month before any of her suitors would make it through of the enchanted forest, Lydia’s more than a little curious about who exactly is climbing up.

She peers over the edge of her window and watches a small figure pull itself up a rope and turns her head to follow its path. Above her head, there is an arrow buried in what must have been a small chink in the stones, securing the line. Lydia turns again to frown down at the figure.

It’s not an impossible shot, but with the almost seamless construction of the tower and the ivy twining along it, it’s still very, very unlikely. In a week’s time, when the witch returned to grow the traditional rose bushes around the base and high up the walls, it would have been impossible. Which means Lydia’s visitor is either very lucky or they’re cheating.

It’s not out of the question that one of her parents tipped their hand in this little trial. Her mother favors the Earl of Whittemore’s son for his pedigree and wealth, while her father is more interested in the military strength of Sir Aiden’s family. One of them could have given their preferred suitor hints on how to pass though the forest quickly enough to get to Lydia’s tower before the witch fully defended it. Lydia wouldn’t mind if they did – she’s always gotten along well enough with Jackson and Aiden is quite attractive. They’re both better options than Prince Peter of the Hale Kingdom, who makes unease crawl through her stomach.

With that in mind, she sits by the window and waits with a small smile and a dagger hidden in her sleeve. The head that pops over her window sill some twenty minutes later makes her drop both.

“Allison?!” Lydia shrieks, all royal composure lost in the face of the cheerful brown eyes that look her over.

“Your Highness,” Allison grins back, hauling herself up until she’s even with the window. “I would have had someone announce me before coming up, but I don’t think I’m actually allowed to be here.”

“Announce-?” repeats Lydia, incredulous. “You’re insane. Aren’t you supposed to be going through your own suitor trials right now?” Allison shrugs, her smile going mischievous.

‘Sure, as far as my parents think,” she says. “But waiting around for some prince to fight a couple trolls and hack through an enchanted maze just so he can take me home and show me off doesn’t seem like all that much fun. So, I decided I’m running away and becoming a bandit.”

“You’re what?” Lydia gapes.

“Becoming a bandit,” Allison confirms. “I’ve always been better at archery and horse riding than needlework or etiquette, and I met a couple of them-“

“You met bandits?!”

Allison shrugs again.

“In the Hale kingdom, when I visited with my father last summer. Prince Peter’s been levying awful taxes on the commoners while the Queen is away at war, so these bandits were stealing from him to give back to the poor. It seems like a better pursuit then sitting in a castle for the rest of my life.”

Lydia crosses her arms.

“So, what’s this little visit then?” she asks, struggling to keep her tone even as she goes on. “Just wanted to say goodbye before you ran off to become a criminal?”

“Well…” Allison stops and looks away, her cheeks pinking up. Lydia watches her, stubbornly fighting back tears. As dreaded as the thought of these suitor trials was, Lydia had thought she’d at least have Allison around to cheer her up. With their obligations to their families, she knows all she could hope for from Allison was friendship. Except now, Allison wouldn’t be in the neighboring kingdom anymore, a short day’s ride away. Instead, she’d be on the other side of the country, playing bandit in the Hale kingdom.

Lydia briefly wonders if she could bring herself to marry Peter. At least that way there’d be a slight chance she could see Allison.

Allison shifts forward so she can lean against the windowsill and then looks up, her eyes beseeching.

“We’ve been friends so long,” she says, her voice a little uncertain. “And I know we haven’t talked about…us. Our friendship. Relationship.” Allison goes flaming red at the word and Lydia feels hope to start to bubble in her chest.

“And I think it’s obvious,” Allison rushes on, now intensely studying an ivy leaf. “Or really, I’ve been obvious about it. How I feel about us. About you, really.” She laughs, a little shrilly.

“I swear I had this worked out in my head. I was going to climb up here and I was going to ask-“

And Lydia’s really had enough. She’s been stuck in a tower for a week, bored out of her mind with nothing but a lukewarm marriage (or possible murder) to look forward to. So, instead of letting Allison work her way towards wherever she’s going, Lydia steps forward, grabs Allison’s face in both her hands, and kisses her quiet.

When she draws back, it’s Allison’s turn to gape.

“You’re going to be a great bandit,” Lydia says, her smile wide and happy. “But you barely know any medicinal herbs or wound treatment and you’ll die in a week. So, I’m running away with you to keep you alive.”

Allison blinks and then dimples.

“We’re going to be great bandits,” she corrects, and then leans forward for another kiss.

XDFigure you would be.thinking Allison is turned while on her first hunt with Chris and they of course move to Beacon Hills hoping The Hale family and Scott isn’t the only true alpha who goes off and saves a love one...
