Are clams, oysters, and pearls vegan or no? They aren't exactly sentient. They don't have brains or nervous systems. So it seems like that aren't animals exactly.
Nope! They aren’t. Do we need to use living creatures to serve as a vessel for jewelry creation? Of course not! No to pearls. Nope. Not vegan.
Now for eating clams and oysters! Oh boy.
Let’s just pretend for a second that there’s nothing wrong with killing clams and oysters, because you think that them being unable to feel the same way mammals do justifies gathering them up and consuming their flesh. Think of the environmental consequences of harvesting clams and oysters as well. Taking hundreds of thousands or more native creatures out of any environment is detrimental.
It’s not about just not harming living creatures that cry and writhe and scream, it’s about not exploiting any creatures, even the ones that aren’t as loud or as visible as land animals.
