I have an angry but very valid question.
Why Captain America and The Winter Soldier movie doesn't mention Tony Stark as a Project Insight target? (I know he was definitely on the list, but I'm not sure if the audience learns it from the movie or from external sources, I'm however pretty sure that Tony is not mentioned in the most important scene that talks about this project's goal).
Sitwell mentions Bruce Banner and Stephen Strange, but as far as Steve is concerned, Banner won't die no matter how much Hydra tries to kill him, and Stephen Strange is a stranger he doesn't even know. I'm aware that they wanted to make a mention of Dr Strange because he will become new Sorcerer Supreme (though it was not explained by Hydra why Insight targeted Strange NOW - he was just a really good neurosurgeon at the time and I doubt that Zola's algorithm was able to predict him becoming a sorcerer because it couldn't possibly include a clue to that future that didn't exist yet - unless of course we assume that Stephen was already injured at this point in time and was looking for Kamar-Taj). Steve's only reason to care for it as of now are (1) all unnamed "targets that are threat to Hydra" and (2) himself (as he is included on said list). But from the storytelling perspective mentioning a name of someone who is usually vulnerable to attack would have more of an impact than mentioning Banner or a stranger Steve never met. Ok, Strange is a civilian so he is squishy and Steve would care even if he doesn't know him, and ok Bruce is a teammate, but like I said Bruce is virtually invulnerable to attacks. If Sitwell said that Tony was on the list, it would be more of a threat to their team. Especially if someone at Hollywood was like "What if CA:TWS was happening when Stark was in a vulnerable position (for example: when he was having his arc reactor removal surgery), exposed to the attacks at the time and the rest of the team was aware of it?". It's a perfect team building opportunity RIGHT THERE. Such a fucking wasted opportunity! Geez!
No matter if Steve likes Tony here or not, Tony is the backbone of their team regardless, if not emotionally then financially. Losing him would hit the Avengers very fucking hard, on top of losing SHIELD's backing as well. Not to mention that most of the team would lose their lives. (Who would even survive it? Bruce, Thor. Clint maybe if Insight didn't find him too via some communication channels he was using, that's it. Tony, Steve, Natasha dead, Sam possibly too if he was listed as well).
They didn't necessarily have to SHOW him if they couldn't, but they could name drop the character. If they seriously prohibited it in some contract then that would be the most stupid thing to do. They only needed someone from the team to be like "Oh, Tony is in the hospital now" or something similar. Done. They could make up a reason! Not to mention that doing this would cover for more than only this one issue, because I remember people asking "why nobody called Tony for help". Name dropping him in such a way would fix this issue as well! Darn it!
Another reason why they should have hired people to manage their multiverse early on, so the movies would actually feel well written. But nooo, why should they hire someone to keep track of the MCU lore?
I hate capitalism and I hate shortsighted planning.
