For the Matt/Mary AU: When Mary was still working as a flight attendant and Matt was having trouble getting a steady job because of his criminal record, he built some sort of “America’s Ninja Warrior” training circuit in Mary’s Backyard (her own place, he’s not crazy enough to do it at Steve’s) and tried to get on Steve’s good side by inviting him to try it out.
Matt/Mary AU: Matt is well aware that if he ever betrays or hurts Mary in any way, Steve is going to kill him in a very painful way, and Danny is going to let him.
Matt kept an eye on news about Hawaii and the Task Force if he could find them while he was on the run, and when he heard that Danny had been hurt, he always blamed Steve.
From the money that he took with him when he went on the run, Matt sent $50.000 to his mom, set up some accounts for the people he had embezzled from and for the people who he had lost the money in the first place and the rest he spent in the first 3 years. He spent a year doing crappy jobs here and there and was starting to think about going back to Hawaii when Marco Reyes found him. (yes, we hates the barrel)
Matt was convinced that nobody had noticed anything strange about the lost money.
Matt has to bite his tongue when he hears Grace (and Charlie now) call Steve “Uncle Steve”, because he’s their only official uncle, and Steve is just the guy that gets Danny shot.
