Over the past decade, Lawrentians have made regular trips to Sierra Leone, gaining valuable field experience and providing invaluable support to local communities. Claudena Skran, Edwin & Ruth West Professor of Economics and Social Science and Professor of Government, has formed a community of engaged learners and volunteers from the numerous groups she has brought to the West African country. Each group continues the work of a previous trip and helps lay the groundwork for future volunteers. In doing so, students establish lasting connections and create meaningful change.
Lawrence’s Sustainable China program transports students and faculty into the streets of the world’s most populous country for a liberal arts exploration. In this “traveling classroom,” Lawrentians examine some of China’s most pressing issues: questions of conservation, commerce and culture.
Students representing a variety of majors bring 10 weeks of academic preparation to bear during the three-week immersion in China.
