Coming to a commencement ceremony near you...
File this under “things I didn’t expect I’d be able to do as an undergrad”
As a biology major with a studio art minor, I wanted to combine both fields within my capstone to depict my topic: the beauty of dental variation. I am greatly interested in why teeth vary so much in anatomy and formation, biologically. I interviewed seven people with dental variations, about their dental experiences including the work they have had on their teeth over the years. The stories listed with each sculpture are pieced together from their interviews. The sculptures, however, depict my artistic interpretation of what their mouths and dentition would like look, had they never received any dental care, if their teeth had never righted themselves, or if their individual dentitions had proceeded along normal paths. Although there are obvious lapses in functionality of some teeth, other mouths carry a beauty unto themselves naturally, that has sometimes been removed. As someone about to enter the field of dental medicine, I feel it is important to recognize and continue to stay fascinated by the unique qualities, characteristics, and formation of human dental anatomy.

First BLU Crew Awards at #LarryU. Fun night of celebrating and supporting student athletes.
Over the past decade, Lawrentians have made regular trips to Sierra Leone, gaining valuable field experience and providing invaluable support to local communities. Claudena Skran, Edwin & Ruth West Professor of Economics and Social Science and Professor of Government, has formed a community of engaged learners and volunteers from the numerous groups she has brought to the West African country. Each group continues the work of a previous trip and helps lay the groundwork for future volunteers. In doing so, students establish lasting connections and create meaningful change.
