January saw the UK release of American country rocker Melissa Etheridge’s twelfth studio album, This Is M.E.. Although the album arrived chronologically as the twelfth recording, for many it marked a return to her earlier edge. Having freed herself of the confines of a recording deal, Etheridge had spent two years developing the release in her own manner and was allowed full creative freedom. The result saw an outpouring of love for the release from her dedicated fanbase.
Having spent much of the year on the road, Etheridge pre-empts her European tour with the release of the album’s second single ‘Monster’. An unsurprising selection for the single, given the echoes of her earliest hits within the explosive anthem, the release shows that Etheridge still has the fire in her belly to achieve radio hits.
While not the rawest or most lyrically challenging of the album’s tracklisting, ‘Monster’ is worthy selection. It will not only get her core fanbase jumping and singing along in excitement of the new tour, but will also win over a new generation of fans for her addictive sounds.
This may be a calculated decision to garner radio play, but Etheridge more than deserves the exposure.
