hiii, helloooo this is me, walking in with some theory thingyyyy (i don't know if tumblr does that anymore but here i am) so, so. this is a dnd-lore dumping thing, so here is me. i think the villain of the show is not the mindflayer, or at least, it's not the inspiration for the villain as of now. i think the inspiration for the villain is tharizdun: one of the primordial gods in dnd lore, with really heavy story, and well... very strong. and here is why i believe he's Him, and not the mindflayer here. the description for tharizdun is as follows:
this is an illustration of him:
like, don't these limbs look familiar to you? tharizdun is said to be imprisoned by several chains that are tethered to "the material world", and that to be freed, he needs to severe all these chains. you know who is from "the material world" and could be used as representation for these chains being destroyed? the children. so whatever ritual with the children would be meant to release tharizdun from its... "prison"/coma, whatever. in dnd lore, tharizdun corrupts people to control them, and use them, it's described as such:
my theory is that the hawkins lab didn't happen by accident, i think henry (controlled by "the mindflayer"/tharizdun) killed these children to actually free itself from its prison, but el interrupted him. i think el didn't create the portal to dimension x on her own, but it was already in the process of being created by the sacrifice of the lab children. i think all the children being sacrificed DO NOT make vecna stronger, but actually tharizdun himself. and i think, the plan here is to use the children vecna has kidnapped, as "energy" to trigger the release of tharizdun. that could mean that the children are really gonna die, because i do believe tharizdun is gonna be freed. it's also interesting because by the end of ep7, i found curious that we see so much of the children, and they basically turn mental on each others. but you know what we see them do a lot? eat. so i think, the mindflayer/tharizdun is corrupting the children by ep7 and the final stage of it all, will be their sacrifice (if that hasn't happened already, ngl because again, that neck snapping... yeesh) there is also something really interesting about tharizdun about how he was originally vainquised by "gods" but that part of him fell into the sea in the material world:
and you know what happened in the first shadow, triggering all these events? the submarine being sucked to dimension x in the middle of the ocean. now, I don't know how it could explain how they're gonna defeat it, but as for the lore of tharizdun, this is how he's defeated-ish:
i don't know which character could be associated to which dnd character, but i'm pretty sure in this scenario henry could be associated to acek.
now, let's look at this "rite of prime banishment" here: and here is the important part, the rite of prime banishment is one of the elements of dnd lore connecting BOTH tharizdun and vecna;
now, as for the prime deities, there are *drumrolls* 13 of them now, let's name all the characters who went to the upside down and will participate in the final battle: eleven, mike, max, lucas, dustin, will jonathan, nancy, steve, robin joyce, hopper kali that's 13. i keep wondering if i forgot someone, but that's 13 (i do not count murray, noooope, i'm pretty sure he's not involved in the fights but i might be wrong, here??) in the lore for the rite of banishment against tharizdun, it is said that the god blows a massive injury to the goddess ioun (but she survives, just disappears for some time) my guess is, ioun = eleven (she's the goddess of learning and prophecy, i meaaan?). and the dawnfather could be will??? as for the others... well... 🤷♀️ i don't think the significations of which god is god of what really matters, outside maybe the members of the party (so like, dustin, mike, lucas, will, maaaybe max too, even tho she never played dnd) (my personal theory is that avandra = nancy, or it could be max as well, as well)
