Love In A Cafe
(day after day the cafe bustles with regular customers. In the back at a tall table is TEDDY with his nose in a book, in the front is CYNTHIA at a booth typing at her laptop. The BARISTA and DISHWASHER stand at the counter watching)
BARISTA They’re always here
DISHWASHER They’re too focused on other things to notice each other
BARISTA Don’t you believe in the power of love.
DISHWASHER I believe that if they fall in love it will be on their terms.
BARISTA (dejected) Fine
DISHWASHER (Sigh) Tell me their story
BARISTA His name is Teddy. (lights up on Teddy entering the cafe) He orders an espresso and a glazed donut (she hands him his order) He goes to sit down at his normal table and takes out his notebook to start writing as she walks in. (CYNTHIA enters) Her name is Cynthia, she orders a latte and a blueberry muffin. (hands CYNTHIA her order before she asks) Then she goes to her normal booth and as she gets her laptop out. He gets up to get an iced tea. (she hands him his second order just as he gets to the counter. TEDDY and CYNTHIA freeze as he walks back to his table)
DISHWASHER They never run into each other.
BARISTA But one day he notices the book that she always has in her bag.
(TEDDY moves again to walk by CYNTHIA, notices the book and then freezes again)
DISHWASHER What book is it?
BARISTA I don’t remember, but but he’s read it here more than five times.
DISHWASHER So.. it’s important to them.
BARISTA Yeah, and he walks up to her and says
(TEDDY walks up to CYNTHIA’s table)
TEDDY Umm… sorry to bother you… It’s just I see you have Midsummer Night’s Dream in your bag? Have your read it?
CYNTHIA Yeah, a hundred times. I love it.
BARISTA From their they keep talking.
DISHWASHER You couldn’t think of more dialogue because you don’t know the book.
BARISTA Don’t expect much from me
DISHWASHER They don’t end up with each other yet.
(TEDDY is back at his usual table and the two don’t know each other exist)
BARISTA But someday
DISHWASHER Always someday (looks at the BARISTA longingly)
