i’m gonna ramble on about family
you know the whole “blood is thicker than water” thing? it’s bullshit. the quote really comes from “the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb.” the bond formed from the blood you shed side by side with someone BY CHOICE is stronger than the bond formed by birth. the complete opposite meaning.
keeping that in mind, i think the holidays *are* for spending time with your family. but i have a very loose definition of family, so let me rephrase that: the holidays are for spending time with the people you love.
i grew up with 1000 miles and a border between me and my biological family, but that doesn’t mean i didn’t have a family around me. my mom and i built a real family brick by brick, with just the four hands that we had between us. but then she moved us back across that border and all those miles to our bio family, and she still can’t understand why they feel so much less like family than anyone in canada. but that’s okay. it’s been years and yet my canadian homemade family still had a bed for me to sleep in when i went to visit for holidays.
see, family is what you make of it. it’s the feeling of being a sibling to your best friend. it’s the people who have your back and who love and accept you for who you truly are. we moved to be closer to family, yet i lost most of my family when we moved. so for the holidays, i think you should be spending time with your real family, the one whose absence you’d feel in your stomach when you’re far, whether they’re your bio family or not.
