Summary:
But the dream changes nothing, and again, Steve is watching Bucky fall to his death. He is reaching out but not far enough. Let go, let go. What’s the point? Bucky is dead. Steve has failed. There are no other outcomes.
Except now there are.
___ Or, Bucky Barnes, survived by the Winter Soldier, brought back from the dead by Steve Rogers.
Snippet:
He has no trouble getting access to her room, softly closes the door behind him and takes a seat next to the bed. The room is painted in a soft pallet of colours, the window open, the curtains drawn open, tied by blue thread. Peggy is propped up on the headboard, blanket up to her lap, looking through old, yellowed photos with not quite steady, wrinkled, thin hands. She was upset, they told him, insisted on seeing the pictures, tried to stand up on her own to get them. Now her wedding band glints in the sunlight, and her eyes seem focussed and intense.
He has to clear his throat to get her attention, and her sharp gaze snaps up to meet his. Recognition sinks in, crows’ feet at the corners of her eyes.
‘James?’ She sounds pleased. No one should sound pleased to meet the Winter Soldier—but he isn’t, he isn’t. Isn’t he? ‘Good, you’re here, we can start the debriefing.’
‘The debriefing?’
She raises an eyebrow. ‘Don’t tell me you forgot—’ funny you should say that— ‘Steve is anxious to see you after medical. He is quite a mess without his Sergeant.’ Endlessly fond. ‘Go on, don’t leave the Captain waiting.’
His voice doesn’t quite work how he wants it to, but he inclines his head, feeling like a boy in a way he hasn’t felt in decades. ‘I won’t, ma’am.’
I just have to figure out who the hell I am first. With insufficient fucking intelligence if he has to.
Her expression softens, and she squeezes his hand. ‘I’ll be right behind you, I just have to finish these reports.’ She gestures towards the photos on her lap and goes back to examining them. What does she see?
