Summary:
Steve Rogers has done a lot of things out of spite throughout the course of his century-long life, but he never thought retirement would be one of them. But somehow, a year after the second fall of HYDRA and his giant middle finger to the U.S. government, he finds himself with a house in Brooklyn Heights and a lot of time on his hands. With his former team stationed on the other side of the world, he's also far away from his support system, forced to ask the big questions for the first time in his life. Question like "What the hell do I do now?" and "What the fuck is my purpose?" and "How do I deal with this soul-sucking loneliness?"
Enter Bucky Barnes, professional wise guy, presser of buttons, and possessor of the prettiest blue eyes in Brooklyn, on a mission to rekindle the artistic spark in Steve's wary, wounded heart, and give him a healthy dose of family besides.
Chapter 2: The Riverside
Snippet:
What he did not expect—but probably should have, ugh—was to find Bucky Barnes sitting at the furthest sidewalk table, looking like a whole snack and frowning down at the menu.
The hand of fate, in Steve’s humble opinion, could get off his damn jock for a second or twelve.
Steve could have left. He could have, and no one would have been the wiser. Except his cell phone burned in his pocket, full of pictures he’d taken all around the borough. Except he recalled with pristine clarity the glint in Bucky’s blue eyes through the window of that cab. Except he still had a thousand unanswered questions about Arnie and the Roths burrowing a hole in his chest.
Except Bucky glanced up, spotted him, and spooked, so Steve had no choice but to go talk to him. Or that was what he’d tell the judge.
“Hey.” Steve closed the distance between them, hovering beside the empty seat across from Bucky as if waiting for an invitation to sit down.
Which he would not receive, no matter how bountiful the olive branch he offered.
