feels like there's been a lot of discourse about Kate and Toby after the recent Kate centric episode on This Is Us. People are quick to jump to conclusions to blame either Kate or Toby for the breakdown of their marriage but tbh I feel like it's the situation that they're both in and them just outgrowing each other.
Toby and Kate met at a time when they were both essentially going through similar struggles with their weight, they bonded through shared trauma. Toby was depressed, using self-depreciating humour as a coping mechanism, meanwhile Kate was also struggling with her purpose in life, alongwith the grief of Jack passing away. Things are very different now. Toby is happy with his life, he is valued at his workplace, is a much healthier version of his past self. As he said, Kate fell in love with a "coping mechanism", which he no longer uses because he's on a healing journey, which is great for him. Yes, he did make misteps, like turning down that job offer in LA, applying for a loan for the house without Kate's input. That was wrong of him. Marriage is a partnership, even if his intentions were to think about his family, he went about it the wrong way. It's okay for Kate to be angry about that. She's not a bitch for that who doesn't appreciate Toby. Stop saying that.
At the same time, it is equally wrong of him to expect Kate to uproot Jack's life, move away from her mother who has Alzheimer's, to leave her job which she is very happy at, a purpose that she's been looking for all her adult life. She's happy with her life in LA, even if she still struggles with her weight. She misses the old Toby because they had a shared trauma bonding, Toby is now in a better place in his life but she feels left behind. Which is normal. It's not that she isn't happy for Toby right now, and doesn't feel like he deserves to happy and healthy. It's just not the same person she fell in love with. They're both different now. Kate has found her purpose. Toby is a happier, healthier version of his past self. They're both vastly different from the people they were when they fell in love. It's natural, it happens. I love that they're showing this, because not everything can be a fairy tale love story.
If anything all it does is drive home the fact that you need to work on your trauma before you get into serious relationships.
