Ok, thanks to this post from @pointlesscandies, it is now really hitting me how much Tim probably thinks his real self would be incredibly unlovable for Pai, and that's an important part of being able to handle the scam and keep a sense of emotional distance.
And yet each time the mask slips - Tim shows anger, or he reveals real pain - Pai is not only not turned off, but just loves him more. And in fact, like with next week's jealousy, we're going to keep seeing more evidence Pai isn't only in love with the perfect Tim, he loves the flawed loser Tim, and that's something Tim's going to have to reckon with more and more over time as he slips further into love himself.
