"It does not need to take 17 years for an advance to get into the hands of people who need it." Dr. Richard Bergenstal, Executive Director, International Diabetes Center. When I was diagnosed with T1 Diabetes, it was Rich (fortuitously, a family member) who advised my parents to take me to IDC for treatment. I was a terrified little kid and it took me an hour but, because of his expertise and guidance, I administered my first injection myself and was able to start treatment at home rather than through a lengthy hospital stay. This itself would have been inconceivable a few years earlier, and we were often told that a cure was within sight, maybe 10 years away, certainly within my lifetime. Thirty-two years later, the timeline has not changed. Last night was a record-breaking fundraising success, but the reality stays the same: even at the forefront of Diabetes treatment and progress towards a cure, it takes an entire generation for advances to reach patients. @corylakeinsurance and I were honored to be Rich's guests last night, and left with an even greater conviction to do everything we can to shorten the amount of time it takes for life-changing and life-saving technology to reach clinical practice. T1 is relentless and, without minute by minute management, the ravages of this disease cannot be overstated. Everything about it entails a sense of urgency, and that should include advances in treatment. 17 years is unacceptable. #internationaldiabetescenter #parknicolletfoundation #type1diabetes #thiscanbedone
