On this day in 2004 one of my favorite crude games was released for PC, Xbox and PlayStation to by Sierra, Leisure Suit Larry Magna Cum Laude. Developed by High Voltage Software, Magna Cum is the 7th sequel in the Leisure Suit Larry franchise. You play as Larry Lovage, a college student who primary motivation is bedding women from around campus in order to get on a dating TV show "Swingles". As Larry, you explore the campus to find women to seduce and items to assist in your quest. When trying to coerce a woman to bed or into an intimate situation, a mini-game will pop up which you as the player must complete gaining favor with your potential sexual partner. Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude is considered an Adult Game. Originally the game was given an "Adults Only" rating in North America. Alterations were made by the developers to gain a "Mature" rating. In Europe, the game was uncensored and contained full frontal nudity and sex scenes. As you would expect for a game with this kind of theme, reviews were mixed. Many reviewers thought the jokes and sexual material was to direct. Those that enjoyed the game praised the humor. The Metacritic scores reflected the mixed response with Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude gaining a 60% (PS2 version). It is one of my favorite games of the 6th console generation. I recommend the game for those who want a relaxing game with a bit of adult humor.#thisdayingaming #onthisdaygaming #todayingaming#videogamehistory #videogames #Sierra #SierraVideoGames #HighVoltage #HighVoltageGames #LeisureSuitLarry #LeasureSuitLarryMagnaCumLaude #Xbox #PlayStation #PlayStation2 #XboxOriginal #PC
On this day one of the most iconic games of the Nintendo 64 turns 20, GoldenEye 007. The game was developed by Rare, the same studio that made Banjo Kazooie, Perfect Dark and Blast Corps for the same system. GoldenEye 007 is a first person shooter based off the GoldenEye movie released in 1995. Video game adaptation of movies has a tendency to poor representations of the franchise they are trying to emulate. GoldenEye 007 is an exception to this rule and is my most beloved childhood games. You have a large arsenal of weapons at your disposal ranging from pistols, automatics, rocket launchers and my favourite remote mines. This single player was extremely fun and had great replay value. However, the best part of the game was its split screen multiplayer that could cater up to four players. Friendships were put to the test in GoldenEye multiplayer and screen cheating to find the location of the other player was common practice. Then there was the game-breaking character Oddjob, who was the smallest character, making targeting him difficult. GoldenEye 007 had many other great features which were unlocked by completing certain single player objectives. Big head mode and paint ball mode were among the most popular. As far as remasters goes this game is at the top of my list. A reboot of the game was made for the Wii, however, it did not have the flair or allure of the original. What is your favourite GoldenEye 007 feature? On this day Banjo Kazooie was released for the Nintendo 64 in Europe. The concept originally began as a SNES game codenamed 'Project Dream'. Instead of a bear, the game was to feature a young boy called Edison. The project was started around the end of the SNES's life cycle and the game was tweaked for the new Nintendo system, Nintendo 64. Edison lacked the charm and mascot appeal that the development studio, Rare, wanted to achieve. It was decided to replace the young boy, Edison, with a humanoid bear by the name of Banjo. Kazooie was an afterthought. The development team wanted to give Banjo the ability to double jump. They contemplated giving banjo wings but it was ultimately decided to introduce a sidekick character, Kazooie, which allowed for many interesting gameplay dynamics and dialogue. The game was released and was instantly a global sensation. Banjo Kazooie received high acclaim from all media outlets. To be fair the game deserved the praise. It was one of my favourite platformers of all time. The game, unfortunately, did not reach its full potential as Rare, toyed with the idea of having Banjo Kazooie as an expansion game through the means of a 'lock-on' adapter. Similar to how Sonic & Knuckles worked. However, due to development time constraints, this idea was scrapped. There is still some visible reminisce of the idea in the game such as the unreachable key in Wozza's Cave. The feature was to be referred to as 'Stop n Swap'. In my opinion, the game didn't need this feature as it was and still is an amazing platformer. Thank you Rare for the fond childhood memories. #thisdayingaming #onthisdaygaming #todayingaming#videogamehistory #videogames #Nintendo #Nintendo64 #N64 #Rare #RareStudio #BanjoKazooie #BanjoTooie
On this day in in 1996, Fade to Black was released for the PlayStation in North America. The game was a sequel to Flashback which released in 1992. Fade to Black is an 3-D action-adventure games, the game takes place 50 years after the events of Flashback. Conrad is tasked with defeating his enemy of the original game, the alien race known as Morphs. You help the Mandragore Resistance with your new companions John and Sarah to defeat the Morphs at a number of locations on earth, in our solar system and beyond. The gameplay options diverge late in the game and allow for two different endings depending on your last interactions with your companion Sarah. Fade to Black was a moderate commercial success compared to its predecessor. This could be due in part to the fact that Fade to Black was only released on MS-DOS and PlayStation, whereas Flashback was released on Amiga, Mega Drive/Genesis, MS-DOS, NEC, Super Nintendo, Sega CD, 3DO and Atari Jaguar. As for critical reception, Fade to Black scored well with an average score of 80%. Their was a sequel planned that was going to be a 2D Side-scroller similar to the original Flashback in style. A planned release for the Nintendo Gameboy Advanced was planned for a 2003 release. The game was cancelled as the Delphine, the developer, went bankrupt. . #thisdayingaming #onthisdaygaming #todayingaming#videogamehistory #videogames #Nintendo #PlayStation #MegaDrive #SegaGenesis #SegaCD #Flashback #FadetoBlack #Delphine #Amiga #3DO #Atari #AtariJaguar #MS-DOS
Today marks the birth of the ninja franchise Shinobi for home consoles which launched for the Sega Master System in Japan on this day in 1988. You play as the ninja Joe Musashi, your goal, to rescue ninjitsu students from a terrorist group. The action side-scroller takes place in the modern era and has you fighting your way through five missions each consisting of between three-four stages. Shinobi was originally an arcade game and adjustments had to be made to make the game more forgiving for consoles. The one hit-kill mechanic was changed to a health bar. This allowed the player to sustain more damage before losing a life. Additionally some of the mandatory completion requirements were removed such as the need to recue the hostages. Rescuing hostages in the console version allowed the player to upgrade their short and long-range weapons as well as unlocking bonus stages that had power-up bonuses, which could be used during gameplay. The game was highly popular and ported to a number of other consoles including the PC Engine and the Nintendo Entertainment System. There were also a number of sequels that were released for Mega Drive/Genesis, Game Gear, Saturn, PlayStation 2 and 3DS. #OnThisDayGaming #ThisDayInGaming #VideoGameHistory #TodayInVideoGames #VideoGamesToday #GamingHistory #Developer #Publisher #Sega #SegaArcadePort #SegaArcade #Shinobi #SegaMasterSystem #MasterSystem #Nintendo #NintendoEntertainmentSystem #NES #PCEngine
Super Mario Odyssey: First and foremost I am huge Nintendo fan and have been since the earlier 90s. Mario the mascot for the Nintendo platform and I am excited for ta new sandbox Mario game, which we have not seen since 2002 with Mario Sunshine on the Nintendo Gamecube. The possession mechanism is particularly interesting and opens up a world of possibilities with environmental interaction. The game appears to take strengths from previous Mario games particularly Mario Sunshine, New Super Mario Bros and Mario Galaxy Combine them in a way that allows for a varied gameplay experience, with both 2D and 3D platforming elements. Super Mario Odyssey will be released globally for the Nintendo Switch on the 27th of October. Xbox Original games are becoming backwards compatible on the Xbox One. There is no word whether original xbox discs will work and if region locking will affect the ability to use discs as the Original Xbox was region locked. OG Xbox game discs are no longer in circulation so I believe Xbox Original library games will be available for purchase on the Xbox Marketplace or on Xbox’s Game Pass subscription service.
