Ússel is blessed with being both half-elven as well as a shapeshifter. She lost her Sindar mother while her mother gave birth to her, but is raised lovingly by her shapeshifter father. She grows up on the remote edges of The Woodland Realm, together with her older brother, who is equally blessed with both being Elvish as well as a shapeshifter. Their carefree lives are suddenly disturbed and put in jeopardy, when King Thranduil decides to implement a new law that restricts shapeshifters' freedom in his kingdom and surrounding regions, for reasons he deems valid in order to protect his subjects. Watching her family's demise in front of her own eyes, Ússel decides it safer to remain the horse she had shifted to shortly before and not reveal her true identity. Overcome with grief, she reluctantly becomes a resident of the royal stables and the king is instantly taken with the beautiful brown mare. What will happen when he finds out what she is? She cannot remain a horse forever. Surely, there is trouble on the horizon?
