Grace and Hospitality
“Never have I been so graciously hosted,” is what I could have said at the end of each night during the Wine Bloggers Conference in Santa Rosa last week. But it wasn’t just in Santa Rosa. I was feted in Healdsburg. I was wined and dined in Hopland Mendocino. I was well entertained in Fulton. I cannot say each meal was better than the last. They were all magnificent.
Our dinner the first night,…

"What the Patriots have experienced reminds me of the (1994) 49ers. They got waxed 40-8 early in that season by the Philadelphia Eagles. They were doing just what the Patriots had been doing, sorting of walking through things. That loss got their attention. And they went on to win the Super Bowl (XXIX over the San Diego Chargers in 1995; they also won 10 consecutive games after that loss). Sometimes nothing you coach, nothing you say, nothing you do can be more powerful for a good team than to get blown out like that early enough for you to create a new spark."

2008 Thomas George Estates Sauvignon Blanc Windsor Oaks Vineyard
Price: $28.96
Available At: Willow Park Wine and Spirits
When I heard about a tasting featuring the wines of Thomas George Estates from Sonomas Russian River Valley, I cleared my schedule. I headed down to Willow Park Wines and Spirits and joined a group led by Jeremy Baker, the COO of the estate. Over the evening, we worked through 6 of his wines (3 whites and 3 reds) and while the Russian River Valley might be better known for its expressions of Pinot Noir or Chardonnay, I chose to cover their 2008 Sauvignon Blanc. From my perspective, it is a relatively rarity to see a single vineyard RRV Sauvignon Blanc much less one with vintage production reaching 607 cases.
A couple of notables, this wine saw no oak aging or treatments during its production and as such encountered no malolactic fermentation. This is important as the estate wanted maximum expression of terroir and varietal character. In the glass, this Sauvignon Blanc had a elegant greenish honeyed straw color with light viscosity. On the nose, the bouquet was complex yet fun with notes of pineapple, mandarin orange, citrus rind and the dust of crushed Rocket candies (Yes, the ones from your Halloweens past). In the mouth, those tropical citrus characteristics shone with sweet pineapple, guava and lemon zest sensations being punctuated by a controlled level of acidity. The weight of this wine palate-wise is intriguing and shows a fullness or roundness greater than for example a typical NZ Sauvignon Blanc . The only issue I noted was a slightly astringent quality as it finished however I believe this to be a service temperature issue and not a wine fault.
Conclusion: While Sauvignon Blanc isn't always my first choice in terms of white varietals, I can recognize the pedigree and quality behind this effort. I was most impressed by its intriguing nose and the elegant complexity it showcased. I see it as a delicious reminder of the warm days of late spring/summer and know it will be a sure hit for those seeking a diversion from the sea of predictably styled Sauvignon Blancs currently on the market. Be sure to treat yourself as it is a worthy splurge and seek it out the next time you buy wine.
