Some weeks after the party, Nicola teases Philip about having his young man.
“Be honest,” Nicola murmured. His hand, tanned and long-fingered, splayed across the silk of Philip’s pyjama top. The mother-of-pearl buttons were cool beneath his palm. “He is pretty. And I know you like that dark-haired look.”
Philip hummed, and tucked a lock of dark hair behind Nicola’s ear. “I will not pretend to be unmoved by pretty, dark-haired young men. Yes,” he said, “I have noticed.”
“Good. Because I’ve had a taste of him—” The sucking inhale of a breath beneath his hand, though Philip’s expression remained impassive. Nicola simpered. “—and I thought you might like to hear about it.”
[2025|017] In Tongues (2024) written by Thomas Grattan
Beate put on her nicest dress. She tucked combs in her hair, slipped the department store's address into her purse. As she walked, Beate felt the world of the living return to her.
Liesl's face now was beautifully made up, also tired. Grief a race without a finish, without the adrenaline of the possible.
Thomas Grattan, The Recent East
Adela bit into the casserole. She saw food only as fuel, the joy of ice cream nothing next to its animal cost. Beate's daughter, like a Russian novel, was both admirable and difficult to hold.
Thomas Grattan, The Recent East
Love this comparison of prickly Adela to a complex Russian novel.
