RIP Dr. Thomas Kurtz - inventor of the BASIC programming language that became widely used in the 1970s and 80s for programming minicomputer and home computer systems.

BASIC made computer programming accessible to a wide audience that included students, scientists and businesses due to its easy to understand syntax, immediately runnable code, and widespread availability. My earliest explorations of the software world involved writing BASIC programs, and I'm very grateful for Dr. Kurtz's contributions to the world of computing.

John Kemeny am Dartmouth College in den 1960er Jahren

Post #42: John George Kemeny (31.5.1926 - 26.12.1992), ungarischer und US-amerikanischer Mathematiker, war von 1955 bis 1981 am Dartmouth College als Professor und später auch als Präsident tätig. Er hat 1963 mit Thomas Kurtz die leicht zugängliche Programmiersprache BASIC erfunden und weiterentwickelt. Das war ein großer Meilenstein in der Geschichte der elektronischen Datenverarbeitung gewesen.

John George Kemeny (May 31, 1926 - December 26, 1992), Hungarian and American mathematician, was a professor at Dartmouth College from 1955 to 1981 and later also served as President. In 1963, together with Thomas Kurtz, he invented and further developed the easily accessible programming language BASIC. That was a major milestone in the history of electronic data processing.

Hace unos días, el 12 de noviembre, falleció uno de los codesarrolladordel lenguaje de programación BASIC, Thomas Eugene Kurtz a los 98 años. Fue un científico computacional estadunidense que junto a John George Kemeny codesarrollaron el Dartmouth BASIC, la primera versión de este lenguaje de programación, después de crear el Dartmouth Time Sharing System, un SO de tiempo compratido de uso en universidades. Desde sus inicios, el lenguaje BASIC ha florecido en múltiples generaciones de computadoras, desde mainframes y minicomputadoras en los 60's, hasta microcomputadoras en los 70s y las PC de los 80's. Sin el BASIC, que cumple 60 este año, los estudiantes Bill Gates y Paul Allen no podrían haber escrito su propia versión para el MITS Altair 8800.
