Oeconomia
Oeconomia [trailer]
Worldwide, both economic output and debt have increased many times over in recent decades. At the same time, inequality in wealth distribution is growing and the gap between rich and poor is widening. Is there a correlation between economic growth and debt?
Documentary about an important topic. But I didn't find it entirely satisfying. Probably in part because I'm familiar with the topic. But also because it was at times a bit long-winded with too much shots of concrete buildings and conference rooms.
It's a bit unfortunate that the director spends time interviewing people who can't contribute to the topic. Like the low level portofolio manager whose job it is to talk with ordinary customers. And that BMW guy who clearly wears company glasses, unable to take them off. Losmann probably wanted to show that those so-called "experts" don't understand what's going on. But that wasn't very constructive.
But she also does interview some people who are part of the system and are clearly aware of the problems, like economist Thomas Mayer and PIMCO portfolio manger Andrew Bosomworth. Kudos to them.
As for the topic itself. I think the problem gets clearer when thinking in terms of balance sheet and profit + loss statement. Then the straightforward solutions to reduce debt are higher taxation of corporate profits as well as accumulated wealth.
