While Todd definitely doesn’t agree with humanity running away from their problems over actively trying to fix what they started, Todd sees the Minerva project as a last resort of a future for his daughter. If the damage done to Earth truly is irreversible and Earth ends up as a lifeless wasteland within the next twenty years, the Minerva project at the very least is something.
If starting colonies in space ends up as the only viable option to humanity’s survival and project Minerva ends up as a success, he wants his daughter to be top on the list to be accepted in these colonies.
Considering the Minerva project is one of its kind, he wants to use his abilities and skills ensuring this test turns out as a success. Not to mention, Todd will gladly use his time on the Minerva station to continue researching and searching for possible solutions in helping reverse climate change and making Earth capable of supporting people again. He doesn’t intend on giving up on the Earth until the very end.
Thomas Lawrence was born in the year 1981 in Sydney, Australia, he often spent his childhood traveling all across the world due to the nature of his parent’s line of work, they were often on the move and switched from one city to the next, ranging from a span of a few years to even a few months.
Todd’s parents were both highly respected scientists who were responsible for adding several pieces of valuable research and results to the science community. Their work mostly revolved around topic of climate change, the devastating effects it had on the world and finding various solutions to solving the problem and prolonging the Earth’s longevity before it was too late. Unfortunately, despite the early solutions his parents and their colleagues came up with before came to the point of no return, their research went largely ignored and the world continued with their needless pollution and consumption of resources.
Todd idolized his parents and their work growing up, seeing them as something akin to superheroes wanting to save the planet earth from destruction. However, because both of his parents spent a large majority of time away from home and out in the field, he was never really close with his parents or connected with them well. If anything, his parents were more like idols to him than actual caretakers. Though his parents work and their intentions behind it did jumpstart his interest in science, since he was a kid he knew what he wanted to go into as a career.
Through his hard work and dedication he managed to obtain several scholarships and got accepted into several prestigious universities, intending to major in climatology and engineering. When Thomas started his higher level education he met a woman named Sarah, they ended up hitting it off right away and immediately decided to get married. Despite Thomas was unsure whether or not he wanted a child, they ended up having a beautiful baby girl.Todd due to his background growing up never really saw himself as a good father figure, but despite the complications in his life he continued to push forward with his studies and intended to finish what his parents started with their research, with or without a child.
By the time Todd left college, he had a phd in climatology and a bachelors in engineering, he was immediately sponsored to do field work in the remote regions of Greenland. However this career path put a huge strain on his family made things very complicated, obviously being unable to help care for his daughter when he’s out testing ice samples on a block of ice. But despite protests from his wife, Todd left his family behind to pursue his career and they ended up getting a divorce shortly after. Todd has always held an obsession in continuing and completing his parent’s work, since the worldwide announcements of the earth becoming uninhabitable and the panic that ensued, he’s only put more of his time and effort into finding a solution to change the planet for the better.
After spending several years in various facilities across Greenland, Alaska and Antarctica, he eventually discovered the creation of the Minerva project.
Todd seems like the type of person who you’d see working in a library, quiet, serious and always having his nose deep in a computer or a book. To strangers he can seem very serious and act like a grump all the time, he tries to keep to himself and can act pretty defensive when others try to force their way into talking with him, often responding with sarcastic comments towards people he particularly doesn’t like.
However don’t let this gruff appearance fool you though, he’s a complete dork when others aren’t watching, and while Todd has always been a very introverted person, once you get him started on a topic he’s interested in he doesn’t shut up about it. He’s very passionate about what he does to a point where people might think he’s a complete loon regarding his findings and studies as a climatologist.
He’s also a very honest and genuine person who will almost always be upfront about things with you, though sometimes he might come off as a bit blunt and insensitive, he’s always trying his best to motivate and help the people he’s close with.
That being said, Todd really isn’t good at taking care of himself, he is a grade A workaholic who constantly works himself to death. If his research and his job requires him to stay up for three nights in a row? You better get that coffee because he’ll more the definitely do it.
