Thomas L. Jennings Thomas Jennings was an African American inventor, tradesman and abolitionist, who 197 years ago today became the first black man to receive a patent for his invention of the dry cleaning process called dry-scouring. Johnson used his wealth from patent royalties to promote social change for equality. He was a significant member of the first three National Conventions of the People of Colour and severed as a trustee of the Abyssinian Baptist Church.
