Summary:Even years later, Thomas finds himself unable to move on.

Her.

Thomas would choose her no matter what it meant. No matter what she had done, no matter what she did, the choice was her. If two people were put in front of him and he was told to save one, she would be it. She would be the one he’d save.

He should move on. He should try and make a new life. He should fall in love again and not feel guilty about it. He should return Brenda’s long gazes and feel butterflies in his stomach and his heart racing.

He doesn't, and he never will. Brenda's eyes aren't Teresa's. They aren't that dazzling blue that made him think he knew exactly what the ocean looked like before ever seeing it. Nobody was Teresa. Teresa was the only one who would be Teresa, and Teresa is dead. Teresa isn't coming back to him.

Sighing, he sat by the ocean, staring out at the merciless sky. How could it shine so beautifully while his heart seemed so torn? How could it be so bright despite him being so numb and distant from everything? How could it be so alive while almost everyone he’s ever loved is not? While his Teresa, the one he was supposed to look after and love, isn't ever going to be beside him again?

The world was cold, and, dark, and empty. Life was supposed to be happy, but all he ever seemed to feel was a bitter tiredness. It haunted every inch of his mind until it consumed his person from inside out.

Life wouldn't feel like this if Teresa was here. And if it did, she would be there to let him rest on her shoulder when it was too heavy.

If Teresa was here, she would sleep beside him every night. She would smile at him from across the beach. She would hold his hand by the fire. She would tease him as they worked under the sun. She would make his life have purpose.

Their identities had been sewn together. They were given the same books, the same material, the same lessons, the same room layout, the same isolation, the same goals, the same life, until the other was a mirror. One they could look into and reflect on who they were supposed to be.

They weren't supposed to fall in love with the mirror. WCKD couldn't have known they would find themselves staring at the mirror with a genuine longing, a want to understand what it held just to be closed. WCKD wouldn't have cared either so it didn't matter.

The mirrors cracked eventually. As time went on they were less and less alike. Their colors and outlines were unique from everything, with some of it being because of the other that they had spent almost their whole life with.

They had changed alongside each other. While it didn't always match with what stage the other was at, they would always find themselves returning to the other’s side, the unspoken love only growing stronger.

Thomas doesn't have that side to return to. He doesn't have his other half. He doesn't have the only one who could make life okay.

Teresa did a lot of bad to a lot of people and so much good for so many. Teresa had been a puzzle that he would gladly spend his entire life solving just to make sure he knew every piece of her.

After all is said and done, as the days stretch into years, the pain only grows stronger as every memory he has of her grows weaker.

They met at different points in their lives, but the longer they knew each other the more clear it became to the three of them that they wanted to spend their lives together. Others might not understand their relationship arrangement, calling it strange or even unnecessary, but that doesn't matter to Thomas, Teresa and Newt. They are more than the sum of their parts, and it's in this constellation that they feel most comfortable, secure and loved in this world.

They saw each other every single day. Despite never laying eyes on any other kids their age, Thomas knew Teresa's face better than his own and vice versa.

Yet they never spoke. They couldn't, seeing as they were in different classrooms. They just had to sit there and do their work while knowing there was someone just like them in the other room.

Thomas admittedly had a rougher time with it. His mind would find itself wandering to the pretty girl just a walk away. From her long black hair always cascading down her back, to her bright blue eyes that seemed to be full of secrets, to the small freckles littering her skin, he constantly thought about the girl whose name he didn't know.

Teresa would think about him during her free time. Whether that was meals or when she was supposed to be sleeping, her mind would constantly wonder about the boy. With messy dark hair that he clearly tried to make neat, too big brown eyes that were so full of curiosity and life, he seemed worth knowing.

Sighing, Thomas stared past the teacher and at the wall. With his chin in his hands, he questioned if it was possible to resent an object.

The wall was hiding the girl from him. The one whose name he didn't but desperately wanted to know. He would settle for anything. A hello, an introduction, something that would let him acknowledge her existence besides his thoughts about her.

Teresa tried to pay attention to what she was writing down. She knew it would be important eventually. They told her everything they say has a purpose so why wouldn't it be?

So surely there was a purpose in them letting her know about the boy’s existence? They could both be destined for something more than classes. Maybe they were meant to meet one day and be each other’s rock. Maybe they were supposed to do something great together. Maybe they would reach and learn alongside each other.

The day for answers to that wasn't here yet. It wouldn't be for quite a while. All they could do was sit and wait for life or WICKED or fate or something else entirely to allow the two to finally meet.

My eyes hadn't left Thomas once. Not when he had passed out, not when he was thrown in the slammer with me, and not when he started mumbling things I couldn't quite make out. Words that seemed familiar but also like a lifetime ago.

Very lightly, I ran my hands through his hair, keeping his head on my lap. His were were constantly fluttering as though they were going to open only to be glued shut again.

He’s breathing. He’s breathing, and he’s alive. He’s just going through something I don't even want to comprehend. Even in this forced sleep, even in the dark, his fear was so clear it made me shiver.

I can't help but feel like I’ve known him before this. I can't explain it, but something about him sparks a circuit in my head only for it to cut out right after. No matter how hard I try to know what it is, everything just goes blank.

“You feel that too, don't you, Thomas?”I sighed. Still not any more conscious than he had been a moment ago, he remained where he was.

“Yeah. You feel it too.”
