Norsery Rhymes from A to Z Happy Thorsday - Donar, God Of The Sky, Proto Thor V3
Well here we are another Thor’s Day and another 20 min sketch of a Norse (and Germanic) mythological characters. This week it’s another version of Donar, (Thonar / Thonor / Thunaer / Dunaer / Dunor).
Proto thor and Germanic god of thunder. Whose name means thunder. But is really the god of weather in general really. very much good weather as well as bad.
This time depicted with his crown of stars and lightning, and his storm stones that bring the lightning and thunder when he throws them. And the kettle he keeps them in.

Norsery Rhymes from A to Z Happy Thorsday - Donar, God Of The Sky, Proto Thor
Well here we are another Thor’s Day and another 20 min sketch of a Norse (and Germanic) mythological characters. This week it’s Donar, (Thonar / Thonor / Thunaer / Dunaer / Dunor).
A name from the old Proto Germanic Dunraz. It's been Donar from Old High German and continued down middle and current. Also found the same in Dutch language.
Literally meaning thunder. Or the God of thunder in context. These names are sometimes used to provide their own name for mountains high enough to be in his domain. Such as the Donnersburg, Thuneresberg and Donnerkaute. Modern German name for Thursday, Donnerstag (“Donar’s Day”) is also a nod to him.
Scandinavian and Saxon sources would come to associate him with Thor and the Romans associated him with Jupiter and Zues, though at a greatly reduced power set, and sometimes associated him with Hercules by stature and temperament.
Germanic thunder god, predating Thor. A proto Thor much like Wotan is to Odin. Ruling over the sky, his home in the clouds and forested mountaintops.
He was occasionally depicted with a crown of lightning or stars in some sources. As well as being large and strong looking with a red beard.
Associated with Thunder, lightning, storms, wind and rain. Not only the unwelcome kind, but also in the restrained and pleasant weather of the welcome type that is purifying to person and land. Making both fruitful. He is also associated with oak trees.
Later associated with both Axes and hammers. Which strengthened the connection to Thor. He initially was connected to throwing stones from the sky that would become lightning. Those stones were thought to embed themselves deep in the ground, and keep future lightning from striking there. Thus the myth that lightning never strikes twice in the same place. It was thought that these stones would slowly rise to the surface and be able to tell when new storms were approaching and protect homes they were kept in.
The sound of thunder had several sources. One being the sound made when the stones were thrown, and when his flying goat pulled chariot would rattle those stones he kept in a large kettle. And finally, the sound he makes when he blows through his red beard.
He is said to receive the souls of normal people who do not go to Wotan's halls filled with heroes.
Personality wise he angers quicker than later depictions of Thor. Punishing those who have angered him. And is quick to meet out violence towards giants, though he rarely fights in the battles of man. He's considered less refined and more of a common sort than Wodan. Which is why he’s considered a protector of humanity. Preferring more everyday people and things. He is often plainspoken and more direct than, with fewer manners.
Some relate him to giving Thor his thunder. This is sometimes taken as a literal handing over and sometimes a more symbolic merging of their characteristics as they are associated with each other, and Thor gained prominence.
I’ll do another version or two of him in the next week or two.
