You know what, the worst part is that Avengers #3 and #4 will have the serious, normal Thor because Russo Brothers and then this Poptart!Thor of Ragnarok is gonna stick out like a sore thumb, like whose shitty fanfic was that? But all it will do is make Thor's character super inconsistent! :/

Yeah. Honestly, anon, I know it feels a bit like we’ve been cheated, but this is the hand comic book fans have been dealt since the beginning of time. Bad writers taking over their favorite characters, shitty plot arcs ruining everything that is still to come, etc. Idk what to say because yeah, it feels like we’ve been cheated but I guess there are fallbacks, too. Avengers Assemble: Secret Wars is doing pretty well by my son. We can pretend that Cap 2 was the end of the MCU (good lord as I typed that I realized that 2014 was the last time that I truly enjoyed and was invested in a Marvel film. Oh my god.)

(tbh it’s my worst nightmare for Poptart!Thor to become canon so....... hopefully every single Ragnarok trailer has been leading us on, and he’s characterized well.)

In the party scene in AOU, Thor says that Jane travels so much that it's hard for him to keep track of her. Maybe that's why they broke up? (As Feige seems to think)

If they give them an offscreen breakup, my guess for the why would be similar. They are in what is basically the most epic of long distance relationships, and not every couple can last through those. In my mind, that’s the only plausible way they can break them up offscreen. (Unless they decide to pull the stupid “she couldn’t handle my superhero responsibilities” shtick they pulled with Pepper.)

 I’m sort of hopeful that they maybe don’t break them up, and are just sort of unquestionably together even if Jane isn’t in the movie, but honestly I hold out hope for things that never happen in the MCU.

But how do you go from being so madly in love with one person for 4 f---ing movies to jumping to the 5th one and blushing around a new person? How does his character not look like complete douche and an idiot? I don't wike this ooc Thor from Waititi's fanfic.

Idk friend. I’m trying to not jump to any conclusions until I actually see the movie because judging by the trailers and the limited amount of material I’ve seen, it doesn’t look like there will be a shoehorned romance in the movie.

All the other Thor movies have marketed Jane Foster and Natalie Portman as “the love interest.” They included The Kiss Scene That Never Was in the Thor 2 trailer. They used his romantic attachment to Jane to heighten tension for the plot (”We’re from separate worlds... Maybe they were separate for a reason.”)

I don’t see much of that with Valkyrie. Maybe it’s because I’m not looking for anything related to Thor 3 anymore, but I’m also not getting the sense that she’s being marketed as a love interest in any way (and even if she was a love interest and Marvel was doing the not sexist thing and marketing her as her own character before anything else, I’d still think we’d see more teases of a romance than we’ve seen.)

And technically, if Thor is ooc then it’s not Waititi’s fanfic, it’s the fanfic written by Eric Pearson, Craig Kyle, and Christopher Yost. They’ll be the ones I criticize if Thor isn’t Thor.

(1/3) Basically the only thing that matters - the footage starts with Thor's unconscious body (in his gladiator armor) hitting the Guardians' spaceship and they take him in. Now, the "reports" doing rounds can totally be untrue (Marvel are so secretive, they wouldn't just let tabloids spoil it away). But, if they are true - I just.. I don't know what to say.

(2/3) If that's the beginning of Avengers3, means you just spoiled the ending of the highly anticipated Ragnarok. Why would Marvel do that? Ragnarok's finale is going to be Thor vs Hela. And Avengers3 picks up 5 yrs after Gotg2, so I guess Thor's gonna be floating around like that for quite some time - all while Asgard is in ruins, his few loved ones have no idea where he is, if he is alive or not.

(3/3) This is how his last solo film ends. His unconscious body suspended into f---ing space. *slow claps* Doesn't matter what other/ensemble films do, Iron Man and Cap's last solo films did end with some sort of closure for the characters. But as usual, Thor's getting the shittiest treatment of all. :)

Well, to me that sounds a little sloppy for Marvel’s now infamous secret-keeping, but if it is true, then honestly.... my only reaction is my first word. Huh. Maybe with a heavy scoff at the end.

Like.... my expectations for Marvel are just.... so wildly low now. I expect that when I go to see their movies, it’ll be a fun little thing, but won’t have any true significance to their individual franchise plots or do much justice to their characters. They’ve become so focused on the ~next big thing~ or ~this is a big set up for infinity war~ that they’ve lost so much focus on their character franchise films.

And with the loss of focus, I think, comes losing sight of what really makes their movies worthwhile--their characters. I think their big three, Cap, Iron Man, and Thor, have been put through a “not always great writing” wringer as Marvel shifts its focus to “bigger and better” things.

I don’t know. I’m pretty much just gearing up for disappointment from Marvel’s film endeavors from now until.... forever. Excluding Black Panther. (Captain Marvel is.... a complicated bowl of soup for me.)

Given the name of the film, it doesn’t sound terribly surprising that Thor 3 would end with Thor appearing to be dead. I think regardless of how Ragnarok ends, I think Thor is going to be one of the main characters they axe in Infinity War. (I’m hypothesizing Tony is definitely going to die or be permanently written out. I can see Chris Evans staying on since they didn’t kill him in Civil War. I think they’ll also be letting Chris Hemsworth go and possibly turning over the mantle of Thor to someone else. The Avengers will become Spiderman, Black Panther, Wasp, Ant-man, and Captain Marvel. Possibly Hulk and Natasha, since they seem to want to keep Scarlet around but not give Natasha her own film. But that’s all just spec on my part.)

And I feel you on Thor getting the short stick. He always seems to get the short fucking stick. Fandom doesn’t appreciate him much, he’s never really any general audience member’s favorite, and Chris Hemsworth isn’t always taken seriously as an actor. But that is frustrating that the rumor makes it seem like they’ll be ending his story on a terrible note.

(1/3) I just cannot buy the idea that Jane and Thor broke up, as Feige wants us to believe. Because it makes no sense. At all. Tony-Pepper breaking up is believable (tho still not acceptable in my heart) because of their differences and Tony not stopping after promising Pep so again and again.

(2/3) But give me one good reason for Thor-Jane to break up. Is it that he left behind everything - his home, his deserved throne - to be with her? Or that she kept looking for him like maniacs for 2 yrs to simply break it off because… reasons?

(3/3) Also, they never have any issues between them, like Tony and Pep do. They are so understanding of each other. There is absolutely no reason for them to break up. But Feige wants to tell me that after 2 yrs of living together with literally no problem at all, they part ways so he can bang someone who is his “equal”. Okay. (Nothing against Tess, those were Feige’s words.)

Yeah, I don’t buy it either. Want to know why? Not just because they’re my OTP and are wonderful together, but because we have literally zero on screen evidence that there’s any reason for them to break up. People can yell until they’re blue in the face about why Jane’s not good for him or her not belonging on Asgard or whatever comic canon people want to pull out of their asses, but it doesn’t change what we’ve actually seen.

Think back to Dark World. In one of the trailers we hear Jane sadly saying, “We’re from separate worlds… maybe they were separate for a reason.” Myself and other fosterson fans flipped because that’s breakup talk right there. And as far as reasons go, it’s not terrible at setting something of a conflict up within their relationship? Long distance is hard–I imagine it’s even worse when your significant other is an alien prince from another galaxy.

So they have that teaser line in the trailer, but then……… don’t put it in the movie. In fact, aside from their initial argument, there was zero indication that they had any problems with each other. Thor talks highly of her constantly and looks at her like she’s the goddamn best person he’s ever met. Jane’s refusal to leave him during the final battle speaks volumes about how she feels about him. Then, Thor turns down becoming king to go be with her. They went out of their way to shoot the end credits scene where Thor returns, went out of their way to find a costume and wig for Elsa Pataky so that she could play Jane since Natalie was unavailable (on a shoot in… Japan? Maybe? It was a long time ago.) so that they could film a big damn reunion kiss.

They didn’t have to end Jane and Thor on a positive note in Dark World, but they did. They actively chose to have the movie end with Thor going back to Jane and having Jane kiss the living daylights out of him. That’s where we left them.

At least Pepper and Tony had some organically created internal conflict. We were led to believe that it was something that they would eventually overcome, but then… bam. No appearances or mentions for Pepper in several movies and then they’re broken up. If you’re going to break up one of your Phase 1 power couples, then at least have the courtesy to do justice to the characters and give fans some sort of emotional closure.

With the way they broke up Pepperony and the way it looks like they’re breaking up Jane and Thor, they don’t give much of a damn about emotional closure or the female characters who were involved with their big hero white men.

I imagine they’ll break fosterson up much the same as they did with Pepper in Cap 3: a one off line that will probably indirectly put the blame on Jane, and that will be it. Which is a slap in the face not just to fosterson fans, but to fans of Jane herself who, as far as we know, isn’t ever going to appear again.

And about Tessa–she’s only rumored so far to be Thor’s love interest. There is comic canon history between Valkyrie and Bruce Banner, so who knows. Maybe their Planet Hulk mashup–er, sorry, maybe Thor 3 will feature those two instead. Regardless of what they do, it is looking likely that there will be some form of romantic chemistry between them because according to Kevin Feige, the only worthwhile female characters are the ones who can fight, and according to the director, “like one of the guys.”

So. My hopes aren’t very high for the Guardians of the Galaxy ripoff–oh, wait, no I’m sorry, Thor: Ragnarok.

Honestly, it’s not all that surprising to hear from the franchise that felt that Jane and Darcy were not integral parts of the story, that fridging Frigga was a grand plan, and from the production company that felt perfectly fine about quietly writing out Pepper Potts and Betty Ross. They don’t value their women unless they are in some way attached to the male lead or are Ultra Powerful Warrior Woman. (It’s no accident Natasha is the only woman left from Phase I.) It sounds like an extension of Feige’s comment about Valkyrie being more of “Thor’s equal” than Jane. Which is ridiculous, because female characters shouldn’t be reduced to their physical fighting capabilities or how pseudo-masculine Marvel can make their character descriptions.

I am so hopeful for Valkyrie and Tessa Thompson, but calling her what amounts to “one of the guys” doesn’t strike much confidence in me given Marvel’s misogynistic tendencies.

"even more of the 'guy' character than the guys." That's some Frank Miller bullshit right there. Like, really, REALLY, didn't we leave this neanderthal idea of a female character behind in the 90s? Ugh. Whatever. God I'm salty. And bitter.

I’m not sure we ever really left it in the 90s. Just look at the action film genre. If their one single female character gets development at all, chances are it’s going to be: I had four brothers. My dad and I were really close. Either way, most background on action women is going to be based in male figures, and will probably be paired with some misogynistic “don’t be a girl” or “man up” comment that validates the target demographic’s sexism.

If it’s not that, there’s still the Strong Wymyn tropes so many “feminist” writers fall into, which Marvel’s film production has adopted as a writing template.
