Honestly his backstory combined with how he is currently (currently bein seasons one and two because that’s where my only Hell on Wheels mutual is) is heartbreaking.

Like, the first things we see of Thor Gundersen are his need for order and cleanliness.

Andersonville, historically, was awful. A failure of a prison camp, too many bodies and not enough room and filthy everywhere.

Hence, I think, him being one of te most well groomed but not exactly wealthy characters on the show.

Like: Durant is clean, Lily Belle is clean, everyone else, Cullen especially, needs a good hose down and a shampoo.

And while he is in a position of power: he has his own caboose, head of security, there’s still an obvious disparity there.

He needs cleanliness and order and his own ‘immoral mathematics’ because without that it might as well be Andersonville all over again.
