random thor thoughts (SPOILERS)
it looked like they reused the Romulan makeup from 2009 Star Trek and gave everybody white hair and contacts instead of tattoos
also they could have imported Eric Bana from Star Trek 2009 and it would have had about the same impact - The Dark World and Star Trek 2009 felt like they had the same throwaway-type villain, in that the villain wasn't really compelling in and of themselves, it was more an excuse to bring people together (Thor and Loki, the entire Enterprise crew)
idk I enjoyed the Thor movie but in retrospect I think I basically enjoyed the movie because of the actors' performances and dialogue more than the actual plot
(on that note this movie hit one of those Things I Hate: having a character become possessed by a macguffin type thing in order to further the plot. said character will often gain some kind of insight from said possession, but I really hate turning a character into an object because of a plot contrivance. Was not a fan of this in Atlantis, was not a fan of it in any Star Trek episode where someone is ~possessed by aliens~, was not a fan of it here. It wasn't as poorly done as it could have been, but 'it's not as bad as it could have been!' is...not what I would've liked to have seen.)
This is really a movie where the actors are literally the reason to see the movie - their performances (particularly Hiddleston's Loki - the local movie reviewer basically said 'he stole the movie whenever he was on-screen' and they're right.) But everybody here does a fantastic job with what they're given (Chris Hemsworth and Rene Russo both deserve particular kudos) and basically everybody gets a moment of their own to shine (except the non-Volstagg/Fandral member of the Warriors Three, wtf was up with that), and - yeah, this movie was plot-holey and the villains/macguffin thing aren't particularly compelling and there are some characters who are sort of ??? in terms of reasons for being there (Ian the Intern), but the performances and dialogue really made this enjoyable. (Kat Dennings, kudos on your comic timing. Darcy reacts the way I think I would react in a lot of these situations, in terms of actually saying things like "WHAT THE HELL JUST HAPPENED?" instead of delivering a quippy one-liner on cue.)
also, DO NOT GO ON IMDB. you will spoil yourself for an uncredited cameo and you do not want to be spoiled on that. IT IS FANTASTIC.
(also, somebody please please please give me some kind of Shakespearan epic-ish thing with Patrick Stewart and Tom Hiddleston and I think I would fall over in happiness. make it fantasy epic and I would die of fangirl squees.)
oh, and finally: does anyone think that final postcredits scene might have been better (and made Chris O'Dowd's appearance in the movie have a point) if that scene had been Jane and Chris O'Dowd (did his character even have a name, I don't remember) - but anyway, if it had been their second attempt at a date and they're sitting down with a menu and Thor shows up and poor Chris O'Dowd is all "...oh. uh...okay."
and then you could cut to that monster chasing birds outside the window or something, but...idk, I think that would've been cuter/brought the movie full circle/just been a better post-credits scene.
(and who else is betting that the Agents of SHIELD are going to have to track that monster down on TV in a couple weeks?)
