Once again, and to literally no one's surprise, it is so hard to get through a Crowley book, even just one on tarot. The amount of micro(and macro-)ggressions is fucking nuts. Like wdym you're acknowledging that this system you love so much has roots that mirror and reside in Hebrew symbolism and shit and then you turn around in the next two fucking pages at random points to mock and degrade them?! "For no system is more rigid than a Hebrew system" stfu 🚬😮💨
Lol in case it wasn't abundantly clear: I don't fuck with Crowley at all. In fact, it should go without saying that I don't have to follow any of his personal beliefs or religious ideals in order to be interested in the Thoth tarot deck. I'm not going to argue/justify my interest in a tool of divination to anybody, least of all halfwit anons. Okay thanks~
This week, I'm starting a general study of the Thoth tarot deck. Fine shyt and I have been challenging each other to do various exploratory studies and experiments within both the occult and our general art interests. So while she delves into reading and then working through the Hekatæon, I'll be studying both the Rider-Waite and Thoth tarot. My main focus for the next few days is going to be 1) getting a Thoth deck (lol) and 2) acquiring some books/resources specifically on tarot and the Thoth in general.
From the jump, I'll be very honest: I know nothing about the Thoth system, and what I know about RWS comes from years of use with my various decks and the teachings of my elders. I've never gone out of my way to read up on the basis or theories of either, so I'm a little excited to delve into whether my own understanding/experiences line up with what the academics have to say on the subject. As for the Thoth, I've randomly felt drawn towards using and learning about it, so I have high hopes that this will be an engaging and fun project just from that side of things.
So the review of The Fool was great, terrific even, love all the symbols and their background, wish there was more on Bacchus and Dionysus, whatever. But! In what fucking universe was I supposed to know that he's holding a white pyramid-tipped wand in his right hand and a pine cone on fire in the left?! And where tf is the purple in the grapes?! Am I color blind?? Am I blind now?? Has the Book of Thoth stolen what remained of my eyesght?? Have mine eyes been cursed into uselessness simply by trudging through 70+ pages of this dude's work???
The Three Fools
So, we all know I love collecting things - pretty things, in particular, are a relevant weakness of mine here. Since gaining an interest in the Thoth tarot deck, I've nosedived off the deep end and have been fascinated with the various prints out there available. Obviously, my attempt at buying a U.S. Games large mass market version was unsuccessful. So, I contented myself with a nice little '78 version from Etsy instead. Absolutely superb decision, 10/10 recommend. The two outer decks just arrived today, and I am absolutely enamored.
The only thing is that now I'm stuck trying to figure out why (if there even is a reason bryond simple printing errors) my two AGM Urania versions are different. As seen in the above photo, the AGM I got by mistake (middle) has coloring that is paler than the other two. It comes up rather faintly on camera whereas in person it's really obviously apparent. Many of the cards, particularly noticeable in the Trumps off first glance, are richer in contrast and saturation in the AGM deck I ordered on purpose. So now I'm researching what's possibly up with that while I keep on with my reading list and daily card pulls.
For the folks who cannot abide by the "I like collecting shinies" reason for buying 3 versions of the same tarot deck (fine shyt, I'm talking to you here), the first AGM I got (middle) is going to be a just-for-me deck. The other AGM will be for readings I give for others, and the OOP oldie is gonna be my treasured lil splurge baddie baby and that's that.
