DAY 1506) Thousand Memories - Fate of the Witches
Composer: Keisuke Ito
(0:00 - 0:30) 16 bars of 5/4
(0:30 - 1:10) 18 bars of 6/4
(1:10 - 1:52) 22 bars of 5/4
(1:52 - 3:43) [same as 0:00 - 1:52]
(3:43 - end) 4 bars of 5/4
another one of those cases where you could split the 6/4 into 2 bars of 3/4 or whatever
I like this soundtrack a lot and there’s a fair amount of odd time in it! It’s also HUGE. Most of it’s by the composer who did most of pokemon mystery dungeon 3-4 and at least a decent chunk of 2 also, so there’s a lot of stylistic comparisons to be made I’d say (including the occasional odd time)
DAY 1402) Thousand Memories - Lord of the Returners
Composer: Keisuke Ito
(0:00 - 0:15) 8 bars of 5/4, 1 bar of 2/4
(0:15 - 0:25) 6 bars of 5/4
(0:25 - 0:36) [7/8, 7/8, 7/8, 9/8]x2
(0:36 - 0:44) [6/4 + 5/4]x2
(0:44 - 1:09) 12 bars of 6/4
(1:09 - 1:38) 16 bars of 5/4
(1:38 - 2:47) [Same as 0:00 - 1:09]
(2:47 - 3:08) [7/8, 7/8, 7/8, 9/8]x4
(3:08 - 3:14) 3 bars of 6/4
(3:14 - end) 7/8, 9/8
A lot of parts have an overarching drum part that doesn’t line up with the barlines of the rest of everything else, for example 2:47 has a pretty clear 4/4 polymeter in the drums on top of it, but everything else in the track except for it lines up more with that [7+7+7+9]/8 pattern. Even the very clear 5/4 at :15 has drums doing a clear 4/4 “accents on 2 and 4″ pattern that takes 2 bars of 5/4 to re-line up.
Way more mixed meter than this track sounds like at the distance of just passive listening. The polymetric 4/4 layers over a lot of it probably helps with that feeling. Keisuke Ito does some real cool stuff and I really need to dive deeper into his work because it’s clear there’s a ton of odd time examples in his stuff.
