AFTER AN INCREDIBLY LONG TOUR, jules was looking forward to just unwinding. months of back to back to back shows, opening for someone who could only be described as a megastar, had been one of the most eye opening and exciting and completely exhausting experiences of her life. but everyone had assured her that the tour would only help her career. get her name out there, expose her to potential new fans. but for now, it seemed, it was just a waiting game for those benefits to start trickling in. to celebrate the end of the tour, and to get some much needed r&r, jules rented a lakeside cabin where she could unplug and unwind until she was ready to get back to work. her second night in, she had discovered through word of mouth that there was a bonfire party down on the beach. the party was far more appealing than her plan of spending the night reading. and while she was pacing herself, she was definitely a little tipsy and was definitely enjoying spending the night talking with someone who definitely didn't know who she was. somewhere along the line someone had turned up the music, leading jules to reach out for their hand, "dance with me?"

Derek was on his way to work for the day. He'd decided to stop for coffee, like he does most mornings. He had gotten his regular and a pastry. He was walking out when he accidentally bumped into someone. "Oh. I am so sorry. I didn't see you."

charlie hasn't seen them in years ⏤ and while they said they understood, that her life was so much different now after the draft, charlie still feels guilty. while she knows she always has a tendency to get so caught up in the game, pushing herself to her limits, she doesn't want anyone to feel like she left them behind. so being able to go out with them for some drinks feels pretty damn good, for more reasons than one. "i didn't know how much i needed this," she grins, leaning in to be heard over the music.

nothing about this has been easy. jules had lived and breathed law ⏤ skipping nights out with friends and rehearsals and all of the things she loved to study. prepare. and while she took the same LSATs and went through the same admission process and was in the same classes, not a single person had been taking her seriously since she'd set foot on campus. everyone kept referring to her as barbie and calling her out in class in the hopes that she'd slip up and make a fool of herself, and while she'd been holding her own so far, it was wearing on her. her vibrancy was fading, and not just internally. the worst part was her suitemate, who jules was convinced she had personally offended just by existing. they shared the space and managed to do so without killing each other, sure, but it's always so tense. she can't bite her tongue anymore even though it's her roommate's night to pick what to watch, the two of them sitting as far apart as possible on their tiny couch. "have i done something to, like, offend you?" it just slips out but she doesn't regret it.

THINGS CERTAINLY WERE NOT COMING UP ROSES TODAY. her day had started with a tense meeting with her label that left her nerves more than a little rattled ⏤ her agent tried to reassure her, convince her that this was normal. that companies like this were always bullying up-and-coming artists, that everything would work out. and she wants to believe them but then the text from ken comes through and a rock settles in the pit of her stomach, because how is anything going to be okay when they're putting her contract on the line and now she doesn't have anywhere to live and she barely has enough for a week's worth of groceries in her bank account. somehow she manages to hold it together ⏤ stays calm enough to make the drive across the city to squeeze whatever belongings she could manage into her car before just… driving. before she knows it, she's stopped in front of their building. jules swallows her pride and grabs a bag and heads up the walkway, because where else is she supposed to go? after knocking, she rocks back on her heels, fighting the urge to run back to her car while she waits.

THEIR VOICES CARRIED, having the same argument they'd had a million times before. because while her father stood in front of their congregation and preached love and forgiveness, behind closed doors his words were full of nothing but contempt. but she wasn't a kid anymore ⏤ and while she knew she would never hear the end of it, jules thought nothing of turning on her heel and walking away. he followed her through the house, still yelling, only stopping once the door slammed behind her. jules ran down their driveway and down the road to their agreed-upon spot ⏤ because jules knew he'd meant it when he said he'd call the sheriff if he saw their car on his property again ⏤ and got inside in a huff. "just start driving," the statement was curt, but they both knew she'd soften soon enough, "i don't care where."

WHILE THE BREAKUP HAD BEEN HARD the move had been even harder. thankfully, jules had incredible people in her life who had all stepped in to help — including one of her oldest friends who had been helping her unpack all day. after taking a quick shower, jules found her friend looking at an old scrapbook from when they were young. “where did you find this?”
