Penance | 1982 | Marlene and Gareth

Gareth had never set foot in Azkaban before today. He’d worked very hard to make sure that that was the case, because there was something about the thick stone walls and the icy water that surrounded the prison that frightened Gareth more than the thought of the dementors. He’d been afraid of water since he was a young boy, and even now, he did what he could to ignore the sound of the waves crashing outside.
He followed behind the officer quietly, his hands behind his back. He had no way of knowing how she would react to what he was going to say, though he could take a few guesses and none of them were pleasant. Part of him hoped that she would just be grateful, it wasn’t as though she could argue that she hadn’t committed treason against Voldemort- but he didn’t think that she would see things that way.
Almost three years ago, he’d been part of a team that had kidnapped Marlene McKinnon and James Potter, two known members of the terrorist organisation that had been known as the Order of the Phoenix. They had been looking for information, but Evan had walked in on where they were holding Marlene and Gareth’s life had quickly fallen to pieces. At least his home life. His wife couldn’t look him in the eye, his daughter kept reminding him that she was the same age as Marlene and Maven just seemed silently disgusted. He’d carried that weight around with him since it had happened. None of them had turned him in, but he had a feeling that was more for the sake of protecting one another than keeping him out of this terrible place.
But he was going to fix it all.
“Here’s her cell,” The Officer said, shooing away a couple dementors with a practiced hand. “Marlene!” He called out, his tone quite emotionless. “You’ve got a visitor.” He pulled open her door and Gareth steeled himself for the encounter and then stepped into the doorway.
