His heart was still hammering and his chest was heaving and mentally he was still working his way through registering just how at a loss he was for what to do next when he got off the Knight Bus just a ways off from the Potter’s residence. He’d have just apparated if only he’d known how. Instead he’d fled his parents house, changing into his animagus form the moment he could safely do so because Padfoot was a lot better at simplifying emotions. Unfortunately, he’d realized he couldn’t just live like a stray dog until it was time to go back to school, which led him to the only destination he could think of. He talked himself out of it about ten times before finally boarding the Knight Bus. But here he was. No changing his mind now. He knocked on the door, trying to quiet the voices in his head telling him he had no right to be there, that he was intruding....

“James.” He registered aloud when the door opened, sounding a little dazed and as raw as his throat felt. The intensity of his and his mother’s screaming had been unmatched by any of their previous fights. “Uh,” he fumbled, considerably less sure of himself than was typical, “...having a nice holiday?” It sounded lame, he knew that. What else was he supposed to say? What was he even doing there?
