   she knew the mistake she made as she made it . she’d been wandering a while now , simply moving away from home . the territory wasn’t up for debate , she could smell it for miles but she would have to cross through . there was no way to go around with the city at her back , she’s already been spotted more times than she was comfortable with . as soon as she hears him , she spins around . reflex would have told her to snarl and show teeth but there’s something about him that shuts that down quickly . there’s no evidence of more wolves in the area , but he’s enough to ward her off completely . there’s not point to howl , she knows there aren’t any coyote here that would help her . a slow step back , she hangs her head low in hopes her can see she doesn’t want to fight . maybe .. maybe if she’s lucky he’ll let her pass .

   last time she was in town , she’d heard about the price on her head . correction , she’d heard some fat piece of shit saw her when he was coming into town and decided that he just had to have her pelt . humans really could be an obnoxious bunch . she’d figured he would hire people to get her , she was half tempted to find wilde and ask for help but it seemed she didn’t need to . instead , she looked down at the trapper she’d seen work before from her spot on the cliff , eyes blue and strange enough to be human . she didn’t call for help , she just watches him like he watches her . one step ahead , always . he was good though , she’d give him that . the staring goes on for a few more seconds before she turns from him to walk away . he’ll track her , he wants the money but she wonders what he would do if he knew just what he was killing , what he was hired to kill . she shouldn’t show him , she knows that , but she’s tempted . five feet forward and then she runs off again , time for some more cat and mouse .

   “ you’re going to kill yourself if you keep holding back . ” she’s found him by scent , she recognized it from a few nights ago . that sickness in his face , she knows it well . it’s the reason why she’s so careful when coming into contact with humans . she walks out from behind a tree at his makeshift camp , she’d stolen some clothes to get by and carried them here . most folks didn’t take to kindly to the random naked women , especially at night . hands up in innocence , she’s seen most humans do that and it’s kept them from getting shot . “ the longer you hold out , the worse it’s going to be . you have to let it happen , at least the first time , then you can work on longer periods between the next turn but you’re killing yourself like this . ” she knows it sounds crazy , but he’s got to feel that animal trying to claw it’s way out . she can smell the wolf on him , he realizes what’s happening , right ?

   she shows her teeth , doesn’t snap but the growl in her throat is threatening enough . if he was entirely human , she wouldn’t have to be worried about the man holding her . something about him was wrong though , something made the hair on the back of her neck stand up . she snarls , but he doesn’t seem bothered by her and the look on his face says he’s not at all scared of the coyote showing him her teeth . incredibly human eyes cut at the man before she finally stops snarling and submits , annoyed . he drops her when she finally does , but he doesn’t leave . instead , he stays there on his horse and stares her down . a shake of her pelt , the sound of bones crunching fills the air before coyote shifts to naked female , standing before him . “ did you have to grab me like that ? ”
