It was crazy to think that there was a time when Dani thought of these galas as something to be desired for. She thought they would be exciting, interesting, glamorous and fun. It wasn’t anything but. The clothes were amazing and flashing and definitely bigger and better than she ever expected to ever be able to wear, but that was about it. Instead of a night spent with her husband having a nice time, talking and enjoying some cocktails, it was full of boring business talk, secret handshakes, business politics and worst of it all, a heel that made her feet hurt the moment she started wearing them.
Dani wasn’t having any fun, to say the least.
She was thinking about sneaking off for a few minutes, taking off these horrible shoes and just for a few minutes, maybe she could be away from all this rubbish she didn’t understand. She knew she was being ungrateful – all this rubbish was Victor’s work. He was doing something important – he’s picked up a new project a couple of months ago, and she hasn’t seen him this excited about his work since they’ve known each other (which, granted, wasn’t that long, but still, it was nice). He only talked about this new project of his in vague terms, so she didn’t know too much, but she never fully understood what he was talking about anyway, so there was no difference. He never really understood her work either. He did start asking her more and more questions lately, however, and tonight she was determined to show some interest in his work too, but it was just too much.
She couldn’t just sneak away, however, so when she excused herself with a smile, instead of heading to a dark corner or looking for an unused corridor, she headed for the terrace and slipped outside, reaching for the box of cigarette in her purse. There were only a few people out here, but instead of going up to talk to them, she only moved a couple of feet away from the door and leaned against the wall. She wasn’t a big smoker, but she picked up a habit of always carrying around a few cigarettes during these events – it was a good excuse to get away from all the business talk.
