“i can’t believe all of this was for an article. god, you’re such an asshole.” dally fought back tears, not wanting to appear even more pathetic than their words had painted her. “i wish i’d never met you. just leave me alone, okay?”

“so...this whole time — you’ve been pretending?”

dally had hoped that by the time she got into the car, her tears would have stopped, but clearly she was just the world’s biggest crybaby because they were still flowing. she let out a little hiccup when the other turned her face to them, mumbling, “it’s nothing, really, don’t worry about it, okay? let’s just go, let’s just...”

“i’m so happy for you.” tears were sparkling in dally’s eyes but she did her best to muster a smile. and despite everything, she was happy for them, even if her heart was breaking. reaching out to give their hand a quick squeeze, she wiped her eyes with the back of her other hand. “you guys deserve this. i’ll…i’ll leave you two alone.”

dally was a go-with-the-flow type of person, so when the landlord had screwed up and rented her new apartment out to two people, one being a complete stranger, she’d pretty much just shrugged and went about her business. sure, it was a little strange to have a brand-new roommate when she’d been under the impression she was getting a space of her own, but she didn’t mind. besides, they’d worked it out with the landlord and paying only half of the rent was certainly not a bad thing. but it had been about two weeks now, and her roommate was still acting weird around her. almost like they didn’t like her? dally kept trying to be friendly: bringing them cups of herbal tea and buying extra of the snacks they seemed to like. she’d even left a bouquet of wildflowers on their bed that morning, but maybe they hadn’t appreciated her going into their room, because they didn’t seem too happy about it. “what’s wrong?” dally asked, frowning in confusion. “i thought you would like them. are you allergic?”
